One of my keenest teenage memories is reading Shadowrun 3rd Edition – not for anything in the game's actual text, but because while the bulk of the book was cheap black and white, they'd sprung for a series of lavish full-colour plates right in the middle with full page portraits of several "pregenerated characters" (who were very obviously the author's playtest group's PCs). I don't know what kind of ink they used, but I guess the vapour must have permeated the uncoated pages of the book's black-and-white portions, because the whole time you were reading it, you were huffing the intense odour of some weapons-grade solvent.
I bring this up because I had to pull the book out earlier today to double check something, and as I did, I thought to myself: this thing is thirty years old. Surely, surely whatever solvent they used will have dissipated by now.
Nope.
Like a kick to the teeth.
