Biochemistry is the study of living matter and their chemical compositions. Researchers and biochemists are extremely advantageous to society, and considering their hard work in this industry and the outcomes of their extremely difficult projects, they should be revered. I have developed an interest in biochemistry due to my passion and curiosity about living matter and its reactions to chemicals and with other living matter. My freshman year biology class opened my eyes to a myriad of helpful information about life and living organisms, mostly how they are structured and how they function. My chemistry class introduced me to the compositions and changes of matter and my personal favorite topic, the elements. In those classes, we performed multiple experiments and completed projects such as dissecting a fetal pig, creating crystals and observing multiple reactions of different chemicals mixed with another type of matter. Even though I have not yet encountered any experiences in this area of study, I hope to be able to find biological endeavors in the future. My goals are to enter the biotechnology industry and to also become a biomedical scientist. To major in biochemistry would allow me to be a part of something greater than myself, something to greater benefit society. Without a firm understanding of the elements, pharmaceutical engineers would not be able to design innovative and effective medicines to treat symptoms and diseases. For example, the biochemists studying stem cells are growing organs without the threat of bodily rejection, which is a phenomenon in itself. The stem cells are leading the world in all types of discoveries, like understanding how to create beta cells and providing improved therapy methods to those suffering from cardiovascular diseases. To have the opportunity to work with a team to revolutionize society would be an honor.
