Holy Trinity is the church where William Shakespeare was baptised, where he worshipped and where he was buried. This very building dates from 1210,with the oldest sections being the tower, transepts and the pillars. It is still a very much living church today holding services every Sunday and during the week. Above the grave, a badly eroded stone slab displays his epitaph: GOOD FRIEND FOR JESUS SAKE FOREBEAR, TO DIGG THE DVST ENCLOSED HERE. BLESTE BE YE MAN YT SPARES THESE STONES, AND CURSED BE HE YT MOVES MY BONES. Quite unusual for a church to have a curse written inside it, but during Shakespeare’s time, a dead’s remain buried at the church’s graveyard can only remain there for 20 years and if no family or relatives will contest it, the remains will then be removed and the skeleton will be burned it bonfire to make way for a new grave. To make sure this does not happen to him,Shakespeare paid money to be buried 17 feet below the church. And a curse was put on top of his grave to make sure he will not be dug up and moved somewhere else. . . . #touristing #holytrinitychurchstratford #shakespearesgrave #shakespeare #places #travelogue #wanderlust #stratforduponavon #warwickshire #england #england #history #sundays #takemetochurch (at Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon)
