don’t get me wrong i adore shameless but it’s SO misogynistic and biphobic. the way they treat the bisexual people (particularly the women) in this show is… so odd.

monica, v, and caleb. all characters that, in the show, fall in love with women at some point and are implied to be some kind of bisexual.

monica - when she first falls in love with a woman her partner is the definition of both the angry black woman stereotype AND the masculine aggressive lesbian stereotype. the next time she sleeps with a woman it’s portrayed as an “accident” or a “relapse.”

v - happily in love with svetlana as well as kevin, but later, when they break up, her attraction towards women is written off as an attraction towards dominance. they act as if she was never really in love with svetlana at all and goes back to being “just straight”.

caleb - while yes, he does cheat on ian and that’s inexcusable, the way they frame it is really uncomfortable to say the least. it’s framed as caleb cheats on ian because he’s bisexual, not because he’s a cheater. ian even says “yeah? well you’re bisexual.” like it’s some kind of gotcha moment towards caleb.

i haven’t finished the arc of debbie being sapphic (i in fact just started it) but the way ian constantly insists she’s not gay feels so icky to me. shameless has this really weird obsession with painting bisexual people as phases and as a bisexual person it makes me feel really gross and deters me from watching the show.
