Three scenes from Shampoo (1975) and three from Dandruff (1978)

A year or two ago I learned that the Starsky & Hutch episode Dandruff was inspired by the 1975 film Shampoo. I'd never heard of Shampoo, but it made sense that Dandruff's inexplicable choices were references I just didn't get.

So how much of Dandruff is taken from Shampoo?

Not as much as I was expecting. The film is about an LA hairdresser who gets into trouble because he sleeps with any female client who will have him.

The salon looks similar, though that could just be the popular salon aesthetic at the time. Both have a client repeat the word "numbers", but in very different contexts, so I'm not sure if that's coincidence.

Both have a husband finding their wife in a compromising position, but brushing it off because they think the other man is gay. And finally, both have a scene where a couple is making out/having sex in a not particularly private place, and passerbys stopping to watch.

So I'm still left with many questions. Why did a script writer think a loose Shampoo parody was good hook? It was apparently the third highest grossing movie of 1975. I didn't enjoy it, but it did have big stars and a fantastic soundtrack, so maybe it was just that big of a deal. Maybe someone thought Starsky looked like George from behind in his brown jacket and jeans?

I still think Dandruff is also loosely a Pink Panther homage, what with Starsky's terrible French accent and the diamond theft plot. But then, did a script writer really wake up one day and decide what the show really needed was Shampoo meets The Pink Panther?
