Fixing It
Starsky/Hutch
4556 words of season 4 angst and mutual pining (and happy ending? who could say!) also featuring the sage words of Minnie Kaplan and Huggy Bear Brown.
Starsky took his own increasing desperation and turned it sideways, into bigger silliness and more one night stands in a few short months than in the last five years combined. He got a Pet Rock. He embraced the Disco Era. The pulsing dance-floors offered a welcome new playground where he could substitute physical contact with strangers for the warmth he was missing from Hutch. He sought out willing partners there in the hope that skin on skin — vertical, progressing to horizontal — would fill up the cold empty space that was growing in his belly and soothe his racing heart. And it felt good, in the moment, before the kickback of numbness when the comfort didn't last.
He pulled back from Hutch, put up some barriers of his own, found new strength in being apart from him even in the same room. It was hard-won, and God knows he’d trade it in an instant for any one of those thousand warm golden moments of offhand friendship that he’d thought were bulletproof until they slipped away through his fingers.
This is a great weaving of unresolved feelings into the general vibes of season four, and into Starsky vs. Hutch specifically. ACL is a master of shining a light on little canon details and making them feel meaningful.
Most Beloved (non-canon) Queer Ship Tournament - Round 2
Which queer ship do you love more?
Sonadow (Sonic The Hedgehog)*
Ken Hutchinson x David Starsky (Starsky and Hutch)*
Shouta Aizawa/Hizashi Yamada (EraserMic) (Boku No Hero Academia)*
how dare you make me choose

Here are some reasons that Starsky/Hutch is an iconic queer ship:
You know fan edits? The very first ones made with VCRs were Starsky & Hutch edits! In 1980, two fans hooked their VCRs together and dubbed music over S&H scenes. These were likely the earliest fan edits using video. One of these vids, The Rose, has been digitized and posted online here: https://video.starskyandhutcharchive.net/the-rose/
The actors knew Starsky and Hutch loved each other. In 1977, David Soul (Hutch) gave an interview with the gay newspaper The Advocate, where the interviewer asked, “Do you feel Starsky & Hutch is a love story between two men?” and David Soul answered, “Yes, I do.” And in 2021, Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky) gave an interview where he said, “It’s important to understand that yeah, there’s homoerotic elements.”
Starsky and Hutch are the kings of hurt/comfort cradling and cuddling! If you love hurt/comfort, you should definitely check out this pairing.
Finally, just look at them!
My Three Favorite Vids by Mybuddy1975 Productions
This week I'm reccing my three favorite Starsky & Hutch vids by Mybuddy1975 Productions! Their vids can be found on the Starsky and Hutch Video Archive here and on YouTube here.
We’ll Make It Through The unhurried clips and soft crossfades lend this vid a gentle, contemplative atmosphere that’s easy to sink into. “Lean on me and I’ll lean on you / And together, we’ll get through / We always do,” the lyrics promise, and we’re treated to familiar clips of S&H offering their strength to each other. But my favorite part is the bridge, where some of the most artful shots from Bloodbath and Survival are given the spotlight as the song becomes more intense.
It Will Be Me This vid is thematically very similar to We’ll Make It Through, but I love them both so they’re both on this list! Once again we’re shown the steadfast support between S&H, and once again the pacing feels perfect even as the clips are given plenty of room to breathe. Several of the clips used in this vid have been brightened, which feels especially appropriate considering the lyrics use a shining light as a metaphor for support.
No Place That Far The verses of the song describe hypotheticals where two soulmates are separated, while the choruses ramp up the energy listing all the athletic feats the singer would perform to be reunited. Mybuddy1975 carefully matches the clips to both parts of the song, letting us simmer in the angst of the verses before exploding into the action of the choruses. I love it when a clip of Hutch diving into a pool crossfades into the Torino careening towards the camera, carrying the movement across the clips perfectly.
maybe hutch's concussions are why he can't keep track of his keys

My Three Favorite Vids by Elizabeth Lowry
This week I'm sharing my three favorite Starsky & Hutch vids by vidder Elizabeth Lowry! You can find her vids on the Starsky & Hutch Video Archive here and on YouTube here.
Bang! It could be hard to match the tone of a song like Bang!, which is both silly and deadly serious, but Elizabeth Lowry does it perfectly. Little moments of Sweet Revenge are spaced throughout the vid, building tension and giving us a satisfying ending while allowing for great lyric matches from other episodes. I especially love the Partners clips for “Man, I'm up to something / Oo-dee-la-dee-doe / Thank you all for coming / I hope you like the show.”
Deteriorata This vid is fearless in being bizarre, buckwild chaos. Anything less over-the-top might not have done the song justice. Remember: Rotate your tires • There is always a big future in computer maintenance • Gracefully surrender the things of youth • For a good time call 606-4311. Ask for Ken • Whether you can hear it or not, the universe is laughing behind your back.
Over and Over If you like a wistful Hutch who pines for Starsky while falling into ill-advised relationships, this is a vid for you! The lyrics paint us a Hutch who knows he’s only hurting himself but is scared to change the nature of the one relationship he relies on entirely. Quick clips of Starsky in a vignette effect are sprinkled throughout the vid, contrasting Hutch’s failed romances. The angst is strong, but the end promises a beautiful, fragile hope.
It seems Hutch and Starsky are big fans of personal space, namely each others'
Always interested in vidding, but didn't know where to start? Used to vid back before computers and looking to learn? Maybe you're already a vidder and just want something to hone your skills? Check out the WWS Vidding Bootcamp, which has beginner and intermediate/advanced sections.
This weekend was the first class, but the lectures are recorded. Classes go live during the week, so you can watch them on your own. There are two times to meet with @aaronantium for a Q&A session to go over the material. You can still sign up! For more information, check out https;//wwscon.com/vidding-bootcamp
fun idea time: we all assume the painting area behind hutch's couch is hutch's hobby but we never actually see him do anything with it. since we have canon proof that starsky (or someone) painted lamps and shades I think starsky stashes his paints at hutch's place bc he's lowkey embarrassed about his "art" and needs a safe space

My Three Favorite Vids by Hardboiledbaby
This week I'm sharing my favorite fanvids by Hardboiledbaby! You can find HBB's vids on the Starsky and Hutch Video Archive here and on YouTube here.
Life With You In The Heroes, when Hutch asks, “Starsky, are you asking me to live with you?” Starsky shoots back, “No, no, no, we’re not going to live there. It’s an investment.” In this vid, Hardboiledbaby uses a little editing magic to show us Starsky’s real answer: “Well, yeah. I guess you could say that.” From there we’re treated to a glimpse of their domestic life—sweet, funny, and steadfast—paired with a punchy beat and some spirited transitions.
Side by Side From the opening count-in to the final line of "let's go to Las Vegas,” this vid has the perfect clips for the song’s little asides and embellishments. It also has the perfect clips to make the song all about Starsky and Hutch. Although it’s quite short, the vid has a big sense of humor and a big heart.
Here’s To Us It’s fun to see Starsky and Hutch paired with a song that’s a little bit crude, especially when they lend their own behind-the-scenes F-bomb to the mix. But besides the colorful language, the song fits the darker vibes of us-against-the-world. We’re shown their toughest days and lowest nights, and the refrain "here's to us” becomes a battleworn toast as in-character as “me and thee.”
This episode??? This scene??? Starsky in particular is killing me, the tired, pained, sadness throughout this. The way he's determined to stick by Hutch no matter what, but it's absolutely tearing him to pieces to see him like this.
The moment in the first gif especially killed me. Starsky's blank non-reaction... I guess the most wholesome take would be that he's sure Hutch won't actually hurt him, even halfway out of his mind. The other option is that he's fine if Hutch does, that he's accepted it, that he'll take it. Maybe it's a bit of both.
My Three Favorite Vids by TM Productions
This week I'm sharing my favorite fanvids by TM Productions! You can find TM's vids on the Starsky and Hutch Video Archive here and on YouTube here.
Black Velvet Before this vid, Black Velvet wouldn’t have struck me as a Starsky song. The lyrics have little to do with him–they’re about Elvis, after all–but TM uses the perfect clips to evoke the song’s slow, sultry mood. From the opening shot of Starsky strutting to the beat, every movement he makes is woven into the music. The result feels like lightning in a bottle, and is probably the sexiest vid in the fandom.
Uninvited I could rank this vid among my favorites simply for the match of the lyrics I don't think you unworthy, I need a moment to deliberate, with Diana hiding in Hutch’s apartment, gripping a knife. It gives me chills! But this vid does other clever things, too, like adding a constructed-reality framing device to explain the opening lines. Who Diana is addressing changes throughout the vid, which lets the entire episode map neatly onto the song’s somewhat opaque and contradictory lyrics.
They This vid is about the web of corruption and conspiracy Starsky and Hutch stumble into in Targets Without a Badge. Although there are some action clips, much of the vid consists of close-ups of the wide cast of characters, some of whom are caught in the web and some of whom are pulling the strings. We are also shown, over and over, our heroes’ gestures of frustration. With the creepy tone of the song, the vid captures the infuriating futility of facing a powerful enemy.
