Real quick, Shane has a line like, I'm paraphrasing here, "I lost both my best friends on the same day, no wonder I'm depressed." and then mentions Jaz, I thought that meant her parents, assumably his sibling and their spouse, are dead
im so glad i got this ask on SEPTEMBER 1ST and tumblr didnt fucking bother to tell me???
ok but yeah, he does say something along those lines. and yes, thats most likely what happened. most of the fandom accepts that as canon, whether or not it actually is would be beyond me
people usually assume that jas’ parents died in some kind of accident and, shane being her godfather, was given custody of her. and that’s why he moved in with marnie, because he couldn’t raise a kid on his own.. especially whilst dealing with the loss of two people he was incredibly close to.
and THAT is why he is the drunken dickhead u meet at the beginning of stardew. shane doesnt want to let anyone into his life, he doesnt want to get close to anyone again. the two people he was closest to got taken from him.. how else would he react? and the drinking, that’s obvious. i mean, c’mon... his entire life got uprooted bc jas’ parents died and he took over the responsibility of raising her. he’s stuck in a shitty job because pelican town does not have a damn thing going for it (at the beginning!) ... he was most likely an athelete before all of this, as well, and he stopped being able to pursue that career bc jas needed a stable parent and he just couldn’t be that for her at the time.
that’s why i love shane... he has such a complicated and sad backstory, and he really does change over the course of romancing him. it’s revealed that he’s actually so sweet... he just had some thick walls up... thats all
glad my post about shane is gaining traction tbh, i'm still an avid believer that he gets wayy too much hate considering how tragic of a backstory he has.
just because he has poor coping skills doesn't mean he's not capable of giving and receiving love :( <33
