Similarly, you think MS!Grian can handle being on a boat with PIRATES? He thought the Bamboozlers were freaky enough as villains. You give them swords and a vast ocean where no one can hear their victims scream? He’s jumping overboard.

Been thinking about shapeshifter Grian, so here’s my list of things he’s been (my au) explanations in parentheses

HC6: puffin (they’re nicknamed “sea parrots”)

HC7: scarlet macaw (pesky bird!)

3rd Life: elf owl (it is smol & lives in desert)

HC8: barn owl (cave :D )

Last Life: feral pigeon aka rock dove (feral)

HC9: jackdaw (“keeps its friends close”)

Double Life: partridge (and a partridge in a pear tree)

Hermitopia: starling (they live in cities)

Limited Life: carrion crow (look at the name)

Secret Life: tawny owl (they live in abandoned castles sometimes)

HC10: crane (standing in water to fish)

Real Life: human (real life)

Wild Life: stonechat (British conservation thing called their songs “angry”)

Simple Life: pekin duck (very simple bird)

Past Life: no wings, but phantom limb feeling (pre-Evo trauma :D)

HC11: fruit bat (cave boy pt2)

Nice Life: snowy owl (winter)

Watcher Grian/Xelqua: white wings, no specific species, just glowing and unnatural blankness

Poultry Man: silkie chicken (I like the idea of Poultry Man being really fluffy and that’s why no one takes him seriously)

Salmon Ghost: salmon (what did you expect)

Ariana Griande: flamingo (pink water bird)

Mother Spore: inky cap mushroom (looks cool)

Cuteguy: pink cockatoo (parrot propaganda)

Everything is post-Evo because I headcanon he couldn’t shape-shift pre-Watcherhood

What’s with the bird?

Summary: Grian’s a shapeshifter and decides to “bother” Scar, and by extension, Xisuma

Since Grian's a shapeshifter, it wasn't uncommon for him to go full animal form.

In fact, it was quite common that he'd turn into a straight up parrot and go hangout with Scar. Scar always knew it was him, so he'd let him perch on or around him as he went about his day.

Grian especially loved perching on his shoulder and hunkering down. Scar was basically a humanoid space heater, so he loved cuddling up to him. He could only really do that when Scar wasn't building though, which wasn't often enough for his liking, so he took advantage of it whenever he could. It'd usually be when Scar was either making blueprints for his builds or doing something relaxing later in the day like watching a show.

This time though, it was when Scar was talking to Xisuma.

Grian was incredibly bored.

So what better way to cure that, than going to bother his neighbour.

He shifted to his parrot form and flew off.

He found the vex fairly quickly after arriving at his base; both him and Xisuma were standing on the train platform, chatting. He practically dove down to the two, slowing down just enough to not get hurt as he landed on the vex's shoulder. Scar jumped from the surprise talons gripping his shoulder, but he calmed immediately once he looked over and saw it was Grian. He lightly pet the top of his head in greeting before continuing the story he was telling the admin.

Xisuma's face scrunched in confusion at the random bird showing up, but he tried to brush it off. Maybe it was one he'd picked up for the zoo.

Grian realized pretty quickly that these two weren't going anywhere for a while, so he took the opportunity to cuddle up to Scar's neck and rest. He shuffled closer to his neck and lowered down so he was comfortable, fluffing up his feathers to keep himself warmer against the cold wind. He usually made himself slightly smaller that a regular macaw would be, which made these situations much easier.

"Ok, I have to ask," Xisuma started, "what's going on with the bird?" He chuckled.

"Oh! This is just my little buddy!" Scar reached to pet the top of his head, "he just comes around sometimes!" Grian leans into the scritches, eyes closing in relaxation.

He'd normally squawk playfully at Scar for talking about or to him that way, but he'd learned long ago how to get Grian to accept his baby talk. Scratching a specific spot on his head made him practically melt in the vex's hands. It was quite sweet.

"How do you know it's the same bird? He looks like all the other parrots to me" Xisuma wondered.

"Oh! He has a couple yellow feathers on his head here" Scar walked over to Xisuma to show him, which Grian surprisingly cooperated with. He only grumbled when Scar moved his own head out of the way to show X more clearly.

"Ahh, I see"

Before Scar could step back away from Xisuma, Grian lunged for the admin's small velcrow pocket and yanked. He actually managed to pull it off of him, and quickly took to the sky. He flew up into a custom tree, holding the item in his beak.

So that's why he'd cooperated so easily.

Scar turned as he watched him fly away.

"Get back here, you!" he shouted.

Grian simply cocked his head to the side in mock confusion.

"It's ok Scar, it's nothing I can't replace" X laughed lightly, waving his hands out in front of him.

"But you wouldn't have to if he gave it back"

Grian stretched his wings out and flapped them a couple times, just to taunt him. It seemed to have worked because Scar huffed at him, putting his hands on his hips like an annoyed mother.

Eventually Grian felt like he'd had his fun and flew back down. He flew just over Scar's head and landed on Xisuma's shoulder this time. He stretched his neck out and leaned down a bit, motioning for X to take the item he'd swiped from him.

"Oh!" Xisuma put his hand out in front of the bird, palm facing up.

Grian placed it in his hand, carefully letting go so he was sure it wouldn't get dropped.

"Thank you" Xisuma swapped the item from one hand to the other to be able to scratch his feathered head easier.

Grian trilled and leaned into his admin's hand; it wasn't terribly often he got affection from him. Xisuma smiled, his heart warming at the bird's reaction to him. If X quietly chirped back, then that's between them.

Scar also smiled as he watched on; it was nice seeing Grian so content.

Soon enough though, Xisuma had to leave. So Scar put out his left hand, palm facing in, and Grian flew back to him, landing on the the side of his pointer finger. Scar placed his thumb over Grian's clawed feet, making sure he's secure before bringing his hand closer.

X then bid his goodbyes, reattached the previously stolen pocket, and flew off with his elytra.

"Bye, Suma!" Scar waved him off.

He then turned to the bird on his other hand, "You little rascal!" he scratched the top of the bird's head as he laughed.

Grian repeatedly chirped, which probably would've been a laugh had he been more humanoid at the time.

I like to imagine Grian as some sort of shapeshifter but it's just an creature matching his environment- everyone always says birds but I like the idea of just the silliest creatures ever

-He isn't an avian. No no, he's a shapeshifter! He just really likes wings.

-He tends to have bird wings or moth wings

-He shapeshifts into other Hermits a lot(especially Bdubs)

-He makes himself super short because it adds to his "oh I didn't do that" energy

-All the wars are an excuse for secret tunnels.

-He spent a lot of time in a creative world before HC, so he didn't understand some parts of survival at first

-Whenever he's shifted into his moth wings he has a tendency to fly into lights

-Similarly, he can't spot glass when shifted into his bird wings

-All of his alternate skins are just his shapeshifted forms

-He's really clingy, and he loves physical attention.

-He munches on bread and seeds when he needs a snack

-He sleeps with his bird wings because he can wrap them around himself

-He knew Mumbo before HC, having invited him to his creative world before joining. 

-Humanoid robots freak him out. 

-He copes using laughter, since it's one of the only responses he knows won't upset his friends.

-He likes to wear baggy sweaters because his true form is taller than his shifted appearance

-Being a shapeshifter(like Keralis n Etho) he has a very specific nod to reveal he's the one being talked to. His eyes are always tinted pink/purple.

-He loves to play with the longer haired Hermits' hair. He did this a lot with Ren'a hair during the Hippie Stuff.

-He sometimes has freckles, sometimes he doesn't. Similarly, hisnhair shifts between an actual blond and like a dirty blond color.

-He left his cats back in his creative world with NPC Grian(who he is on good terms with in our Headcanon.).
