“Sweet Serenity”
Just as I promised on my last post, I’ll tell you all on how I did the Betty Boop pop art painting for @alovelyflowerinbloom. This was one of the most funnest pieces I’ve done as of this year and even provided good practice for me to get back into canvas art and advance on it. I originally wanted to post the full pencil of this piece before I colored on it along with the background. But, I deleted those photos to help my cell phone get more storage at the time. Next time, I’ll post a step-by-step of my next piece. -I had her go to Google Images and search “Betty Boop cartoon frame” to see what random image from one of the cartoons sticks out more to her. Of course, I didn’t tell her what the images were for and she gave me a pic of two images from two separate Betty Boop cartoons. I made my choice to do the pose from the Betty Boop cartoon, “Snow White”, and penciled it out on the canvas. I decided to split the difference to do a modern version of the character adding a few details of my own. -After I got my reference, I got to work on the painting immediately. The frame I got from Betty Boop’s Snow White wasn’t exactly as detailed as I thought it would be. I decided to use a few references from the modern Betty Boop model sheets combined between the original style of the cartoons. I got to work on the background since it was one of Ayanna’s favorite colors, pink, with Betty Boop’s dress being red (her second favorite color). This took me a few weeks to do because of my college work at the time because of my college work at the time. I sat down and do the rest of the coloring in one day. After I finished, I was extremely proud of the results and try to hide it off from her especially during our camera calls until the big day. -Decided to play around with filters to say how my full color painting looks just like in black and white. I really love that it looks just like something out of the Max Fleischer cartoons complete with the background looking like a dimly-lit intro to a black and white film.

Nighttime, darkness, shadows....all have been in the fears of humanity for centuries, so I used that to inspire the “true monster” prompt.
