A hesitant smile. "Hey.... what would you do if I said I had a nightmare? Hypothetically."

“If you had a nightmare…?”

He frowned.

“Of course I’d ask you about it.”

‘I’d be worried…’

Eyes fixed upon the other’s, he lifted a brow. Hypothetical as it may be, there had to be a reason why Kouichi would bring this up.

…Perhaps it wasn’t hypothetical at all.

“Why’d you ask? Something up?”

"Of course," Kouichi breathed, like an echo, meeting Kouji's gaze.

Of course there was a reason. Kouichi wouldn't want to worry his brother unfounded. That he had come to ask Kouji about it was only a sign that it had gone too far for him to handle alone.

He knew his brother would see through his hypothesis, but Kouichi still hadn't wanted to be so absolutely blunt about it.

The slightly elder twin sat down carefully. "It's just... I haven't been sleeping well, lately, and..." 'and it'd be selfish of me to ask to sleep over...'

"do you want to come over?" 'if you aren't busy...' He was already berating himself for how he phrased it. That, and he could've been much more subtle. Maybe he really should have left it alone.

—childhood headcanon

As a young boy growing up in a household with his mother and his grandmother, he was sometimes made fun of for being a ‘mama’s boy.’ He took it in stride, and instead focused on entertaining himself by participating in activities such as coloring or reading, or running around like the clumsy little kid he was. Sometimes he would isolate himself this way, and felt he didn’t fit in with other people.

Other kids his age didn’t understand him and the troubles he dealt with, burdened by some secret weight of the disappearance of his father and brother that Kouichi could never properly explain, since he didn’t really know. Instead, he grew up worried as he watched his grandmother wither over the years.

A lot of Kouichi’s childhood was filled with worry, and eventual envy, but that didn’t mean he had a bad one. He grew up pretty independent and introverted, trying to support his mother as much as she was supporting him.
