A Great Need: Children in China and Taiwan with Down Syndrome Superkids spent the month of October in Taiwan and China. We traveled to over a dozen cities to see more than 200 adoptable children. The final trip will take Superkids to Guizhou for a week over the Thanksgiving holiday, to update files for children who were formerly on the ‘shared list’. As Gladney staff and volunteers return home, the hearts and minds of the teams collectively reflect and wonder and hope. We hope that there are families for these children we have met. Over the past month we cuddled, chased, and developmentally screened close to 60 children who have Down Syndrome. As National Adoption Month begins, we would like to announce that a portion of funds in Gladney Center’s Asia Adoption Support Fund will be made available to parents adopting a child with Down Syndrome through Gladney Center. Grants will be in the amount of $4,000 for children who are matched with parents who have completed their Gladney Application. The grant will be applied to offset program fees due after home study approval and after the official child referral has been signed. Families who complete their applications between now and February 1, 2017, are eligible to apply for this grant. "Come on, you can do it. You can look past the stroller wheelchair. Look right past the cerebral palsy diagnosis and you will see Lorelei. If you look past the wheelchair you will see a five-year-old who loves school. You will see her beauty. You will see a shy little smirk and a gleam in her eyes that shows how wise and silly she really is. You will see a song-singing-machine! Yes, she will need help moving around the rest of her life. But if you look past her mobility to see who she is and what she has to offer, I promise you will be continually surprised. Does your family see Lorelei?" For more information on Lorelei please contact April Uduhiri at [email protected]. Lorelei is one of many great kids waiting for a family! "Ohhhhh, what a cuddle bug. Don't you see him and just want to pick him up and squeeze him? Or tickle him - yes, he has the most adorable little giggle! Lonnie is 20 months old and he sits by himself and creeps on his tummy. He has Down syndrome and an extra digit on his left hand. He uses his hands really well banging blocks and of course, putting toys in his mouth. Don't you want to play with this cuddly boy?" ~ Keely Farkas, Superkids Pediatric Physical Therapist #GuangMingStar #AChildToLove #GladneyCenterForAdoption #WaitingChild #AdoptionAdvocate #ShareAdoption For more information on Lonnie please contact April Uduhiri at [email protected]. Gladney Center for Adoption 光明 Guang Ming/Waiting Child Program The Chinese characters, Guang ("light" or "bright") and Ming ("bright", "clear") together portray the meaning of a bright future and are also used to refer to someone who is promising and who has great potential. We feel these words capture the essence of our mission at Gladney and our hopes for the children.
