Re: Meaning of “Tears of the Kingdom”

What if the word “tear” is actually supposed to mean the verb? And the subsequent noun? (see 1st and 2nd entries on Merriam Webster)

The splitting of the land itself or the kingdom breaking into fractures. Much like how the castle is now in the air and Link needs to go between land and air

The literal nature of the land of Hyrule will stay changed? Torn (tears) kingdom.

Breath of the Wild title emphasized the environment as its own character - because for gameplay we explored the world as we see fit. And for story wise, we see how Hyrule is 100 years after the Calamity apocalypse.

So it’d be neat if “Tears of the Kingdom” also parallels the importance of the literal setting. Link may have to find ways to restore land of Hyrule after the castle floats in the air, and whatever else it triggered to change the landscape.

Think about it. Nintendo did not want to reveal the official title for the sequel too soon because it could give away a big secret. While the recent trailer opened up tons of speculation that would make it hard to see “what is it we are all supposed to deduct from the name itself?”, I think this theory makes sense as to why they chose not to share title too soon. Imagine getting the name in 2021, before seeing the recent Nintendo Direct. Without seeing more ruins art that is rife with juicy mysteries for us to ponder over - and think that the “tears” relate to the past and present - more of us could have deduced the drastic change in physical landscape of Hyrule is behind the meaning of the title.

(Also, this would not be first time wordplay is used in a Zelda title. Skyward Sword has two meanings. 1) Pointing the sword skyward to use the Goddess’ powers. 2) ward meaning protect, so the sword is used by the Chosen Hero to protect the sky from Demise and his underlings)
