The 2016 Shark Summit will bring together policymakers, scientists, advocates, youth of Dumaguete City, and stakeholders from various industries to create an integral movement in developing and laying down the Philippines’ shark and ray conservation frameworks. There will be workshops on research, policy, and campaigns; an exclusive screening of On The Brink: Uncharted Waters - Documentary; and talks about ongoing shark and ray conservation initiatives around the country.

The Summit participants have been pre-selected, but limited slots are available to the public for a modest fee of P750/day, which includes snacks, lunch, and registration.

So far this year there have been 19 unprovoked shark attacks Australia-wide. The majority occurred in NSW which saw thirteen attacks, up from just three in 2014. With the number of attacks on the rise, all the states are struggling to find a solution that will keep our beaches safe. NSW has resisted calls for sharks to be culled, but Queensland has been running a drum lines culling program since 2013. Although experts say there’s been little evidence of its effectiveness. Western Australia also trialled culling last year, but it reversed the policy soon after. The NSW government has taken the lead commissioning a Shark Summit of over 70 experts from Australia and the world to discuss emerging alternatives to culling and shark nets. It's the first step to finding a solution that will keep both swimmers and marine life safe.
