Of Mozart,Mandolin and Madurai Mani!
The True Musical season is on in Mylapore!
I remember ,once,an 80 yr old man next to me in Mylapore Fine Arts enjoying T.V.Sankaranarayanan’s concert said : “For the sake of Madurai Mani I will travel any distance..I come all the way from Anna Nagar!”
Music is a Medicine for sure cure under any circumstances,I feel!
On another occasion, there was an aged…

Dr.Alagappa Chettiar
Today I remember Dr.Alagappa Chettiar, whose unselfish Philonthrophy in a remote, drylands of Tamil Nadu, Karaikudi, has made many noteworthy men of Calibre all over the World.Often we forget how difficult it is to donate all your savings just to educate the needy poor,in a World,of highly Selfish Individuals and Corrupt Politicians. There is nothing equal to giving education to the needy and poor as Bharathi says
“அன்னச்சத்திரம் ஆயிரம்நாட்டல்; ஆலயம் பதினாயிரம் வைத்தல்;அன்னயாயினும் புண்ணியம் கோடி,ஆங்கோர் ஏழைக்கு எழுத்தறிவித்தல்!” There is nothing equivalent to education, The Upanishads, says it beautifully: “Na chora haaryam, na cha raja haaryam, na bhaatr bhaajyam, na bharakaari
Vyayam krute vardhat evam nityam vidhyadhanam sarvadhana pradhanam” meaning,
“It (Education)Cannot be snatched away by a thief, cannot be taken away by a king either, Cannot be divided among the brothers, Nor it is heavy either as you accumulate! If spent daily, it always keeps growing. The wealth of knowledge is the precious of wealth of all”
What a wise Statement indeed!
(My Bagavad Gita book autographed by my father and by Swami Paramarthanada, with the above words.Precious indeed!https://wp.me/a3VMgw-eO )
My father devoted all his life in making the poor villagers of Ramnad educated. That has probably helped me in having a daughter, who has devoted all her concentration in helping the poor and needy children of Africa,in her own humble way from African Leadership Academy in Jbrg to Harambee in Nairobi. I was looking at the Preschool School Magazine of my grandkids and what a transformation we are witnessing..the smartness and extra curricular activities are beyond my imagination. The foundations if , built stronger, the future will be solid both for the individuals and the society as a whole!

Ijebuode,Nigeria..1984
I was one of the Members of the very active Indian Association,Ijebuode 83-84 to celeberate our Association Day during Easter Holidays 1984! We planned the event well in advance and I was taking Responsibility to print this Sovenir with sponsorships and I got the whole Souvenir done in my Phonodisk (Nigeria)Ltd..
My Co.,which Printed the Souvenir84
Indian Cultural Assn 1984 Ijebuode
I cannot express in mere words the enthusiasm of my printing staff headed by Abiola..their enthusiasm was so Great that they printed Afthab,President of our assn picture smaller in size comapred to mine..Aftab my good friend didn’t mind it at all.Such was the togetherness of nearly 500 Indians..mostly Teachers from Kerala!
ICA Ijebuode Committee 1983-84
A.C.Kurian,more known as Audi Kurian,a Dynamic fellow was the Jt Secretary and his wife and my wife started preparing Two pieces from Sound of Music...”Its a Small World After All and So Long Farewell” for the Function! My wife was doing such a great job it was shaping to be a Masterpiece with friends peeping into our house everyday and my elder daughter Charu was playing the Keyboard “Its a Small World and narrating the Story of that Orphan Boy…One Varma,a great friend of mine from Patna, his 5 yr old son was acting as the Orphan Boy in that play!”
Its a Small World After All by Charu and co.,
HC Sinivasan appreciating Charu..Sharma’s son looks on!Prof.Balakrishnan busy with Prizes!
Kurian was asking me to accompany him to go to Lagos to invite the Indian High Commissioner ,Mr.Srinivasan for the function. When we called on him he said he was not Free on anyother day other than that Good Friday!Kurian said OK without understanding that Good Friday is a Mourning Day for most of our Christian Friends..He too was one..but he probably didn’t think too much at that Time! When we returned and informed that Srnivasan had accepted the invite,Kurian particularly was bombarded by all Christian Friends including his wife, Left and Right for accepting that date…I decided to bail him out by talking to the HC and requesting for a change in that date..Luckily he accepted my request to have the function on the Easter Sunday!
On that Easter Sunday, there was a crowd of more than 1500 with all their families including our close Pakistani friends for that function when there were many variety entertainment programmes, including my close friend Sundaresan’s wife Geetha’s Carnatic Music recital, for which I played Mridangam and spoilt her Moods! For many Teachers their contracts were getting over and Remittances were getting difficult and they were all planning to go away to other states or countries from Ijebuode and hence this was a sort fo last function and fittingly when my 4 yr old daughter,Sharmi sang..”So Long Farewell..”from The Sound of Music..there was such a reception and the HC Srinivasan literally lifted my daughter high above to the Jubiliation of Afthab and all of Us!
Sharmi@4yrs in Ijebuode,awaiting to sing”So Long Farewell!”
“So Long Farewell..” from Sound of Music infront of Indian High Commissioner,Nigeria and 1500 audience..Fearless ..to Thunderous Cheers! My most fav.picture!!
Prof.Balakrishnan lifts Sharmi to HC Srinivasan..Pesident Ahmed and HC Srinivasan admire!
There was so much Happiness all around with Dinner and Drinks..Many felt that we may not have another function or get together like this Ever..At that Moment…
my close friend Chaudhary called me and wanted to say something very Confidentially..We went outside..He said..”Suri..Verma met with an accident on way back from Lagos..Dead on the Spot!(His son was acting as the Orphan Boy!)OMG….
I was shattered to pices..Chaudhary and me with a few like Prof Srikantaiah used to conduct Sathsanghs..So Chaudhary said..”Don’t spoil the mood..We will inform the boy a bit later!”
As a mark of Respect we gave a Great send off to Verma’s body..we collected nearly Rs 2lacs(in1984)and sent officially to the bereaved Family! That became a Regular custom as meeting with accidents in Lagos Express Ways was a way of Life those days!
Now,searching for Kurians,Verma’s son and Daughter,Bhansals,Sharmas,..where ever you may be…We can’t forget your great Spirits on those Days in Ijebuode!
Good Old Good Friday Memories…! Ijebuode,Nigeria..1984 I was one of the Members of the very active Indian Association,Ijebuode 83-84 to celeberate our Association Day during Easter Holidays 1984!
