Dana International was the first openly transgender person to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Dana was the Israeli entry for the 1998 contest, winning with her song "Diva."
Sharon Cohen was born in Tel Aviv in 1969. She came out as trans to her family when she was 13.
At 18, she became Israel's first drag queen. She adopted the stage name Dana International during this time, and continued to use the name after her transition.
When it was announced that Sharon would be representing Israel at Eurovision, many Orthodox Jewish people were opposed to the idea.
After winning the contest Dana International stated: “My victory proves God is on my side... I want to send my critics a message of forgiveness: try to accept me. I am what I am," she continued, "I don’t care what they say about me... I believe in God, in freedom, that everyone has a right to live how they choose.”
DANA International is one of the most controversial acts to have entered Eurovision – having been the first transgender contestant in the show’s history
Conchita is not trans at all. I think that conchita is a drag persona, and when they are not conchita they are gender neutral. I may be slightly wrong though
You are right I fucked up I’m sorry I’ll put that post on private so people can see it but not reblog it and therefore know what it was about (also its a really popular post you might want to check and see if you haven't accidentally reblogged it). According to her wikipedia page (which admittedly may be wrong) Conchita Wurst is the drag persona of Thomas Neuwirth, he's nonbinary, please let me know if I'm wrong.
Here’s another post that’s just an enthusiastic show of support for Conchita Wurst.
Sorry about that everyone, I’ll check my references better next time.
Oh and here’s some information about Sharon Cohen aka Dana International and here she is blowing everyone away.
so if Conchita is a drag act (who uses she/her pronouns in said drag act), that's not exactly the trans milestone we were hoping for :(
aww i’m sorry anon, but at least its still great to see non-normative beauty, right? :( <3
and it’s not, you’re right, but it wouldn’t be if conchita was trans either, because an israeli trans woman entered, twice, and won the first time!!! her name is sharon cohen, she won way back in 1998 uwu
i found a cool quote from her wikipedia page that i hope will cheer you up~ (her stage name is dana international, but she’s not a drag act by any means):
"She has released eight albums and three additionalcompilation albums, positioning herself as one of Israel’s most successful musical acts ever. She is most famous for having won theEurovision Song Contest 1998 in Birmingham with the song “Diva”.”
When we talk about Eurovision this is probably one of my favourite things that happened since I've been watching it:
In 1998, Sharon Cohen (under her stage name of Dana International) wins the contest and takes the title for her home country Israel. After the heavy opposition she faced from conservatists in her own country and a lot of nasty articles in every second newspaper from close minded people that didn't want to accept a trans women going for success.
And she did it! And people loved her. And voted for her. And she showed all of them.
