     “She’s the leading lady of my film. Or, she will be anyway, when we start filming. She has such strong stage presence, I couldn’t imagine anyone better for the silver screen! I guess I don’t really know her personally, but it’s probably best to keep things professional for now. N-not for now, as if anything would actually happen in the future, but...wouldn’t be a bad thing if the possibility existed. Ugh, I should have learned when to stop talking a long time ago.”

     “What can I say about Sharpay? She’s obviously talented, but it’s like...she can’t let anyone shine brighter than her, even her own brother. Back in high school, she always acted like he was her sidekick or something, and I was the villain who stole her spotlight and her crush. But it wasn’t really like that—we’re not characters in a movie, we’re just people. And it’s so confusing, too, because sometimes she acts so nice and I think there’s really a good heart inside of her that she just doesn’t know how to show all the time...but then she’ll go behind your back and do something shady to get the upper hand, and it’s like...she sees life as this competition, or game that I don’t even wanna be playing. I wish we could just be friends, not frenemies.”

     Life had been easy-swimming since Darla had gotten her braces out, the summer between middle and high school having marked a turning point in her young life. She was never popular, even when she came back from break with a perfect smile, because all the kids she’d gone to school with for years still remembered her as brace-face—but at least those old nicknames lost all their power when she lost the mouth full of metal. Only a few especially cruel kids still teased her after that, finding other things such as her hair color or freckles to pick on, but she had a tougher skin to deal with it by that point. And a few friends to help her handle the rest.

     One person Darla hadn’t seen in a few years, but recognized immediately as one of the taunting voices that plagued her subconscious every time she looked in a mirror...was Sharpay Evans. The very Sharpay standing not a couple feet away browsing clothes from the same store. Randomly meeting her former bully out in the world like this was like being unceremoniously tossed in piranha-inhabited waters. She tried to skirt around the clothing rack and avoid being scented, failing when she tripped and bumped into the blonde.

     Sharpay Evans was someone whose talents in the theater Prilla had been following since she attended her first high school musical. The other woman was a couple years older, and by that time had already earned herself a leading role in the drama department; it wasn’t until Prilla’s own junior year, right after Miss Evans had graduated, that she’d gathered the nerve to audition herself. Of course she hadn’t played the star, but she’d had an amazing time throughout the production, and had even discovered her magic through her love of the stage.

      Ever since she had begun studying for a drama degree in college, she had also been looking to the local theater scene for inspiration and guidance. Getting the opportunity to work alongside one of the actresses she admired was a huge opportunity in itself, which she wasn’t planning to take for granted. “Miss Evans?” she prompted politely as soon as she got a moment. “Hello. I’m Prilla,” she re-introduced herself in case the other didn’t remember her name. “I just wanted to ask if you had any tips for a less-experienced actor?”
