Sharpville - Hugh Masekela (Hugh Masekela, 1968)
It's Human Rights Day today. The day we take a look back into our not so distant past as slaves without chains in our own country.
Today we remember the brave men and women who under the leadership of Robert Sebokwe took to the streets in resistance to the pass laws of the country. We also remember their senseless killings by the apartheid police who shot at unarmed people and never got to be held accountable for it.
Robert Sebokwe was considered to be so dangerous by the apartheid government that they made a Sebokwe Clause to keep him at Robben Island for years. His words and ideas were considered so radical and powerful that they went around destroying any recording of his speeches, they had him under surveillance 24/7.
Today we remember the people and honor the man.
‘Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.’
- Isaiah 1:17
A blessed human rights day my family, friends, and comrades in Christ.
21 March 1960 On this day protesters took to the street in opposition to the intense segregation laws opposed on people of colour in South Africa during the Apartheid Era. I spoke to my parents on many occasions about what growing up in this time was like and the one thing that always came up was their pass books. If you were a non white in the Apartheid Era, your identification documents were different. This was a way for the authorities to restrict the volume of black, coloured and POC populations in certain areas. Today is a day where we in South Africa remember the countless human rights violations which occurred over the years and still happen today, whether it is due to what has happened or due to our new government, it does not matter. What we as humans should be concerned about is what we are doing to prevent further human rights violations from occurring around us.
