for all the “hate” lassiter projects towards shawn, I was expecting him to punch shawn immediately after shawn asked him to in s5e5. (it was to keep shawn’s cover from being blown) not only did shawn have to ask repeatedly; lassiter was confused and frankly appalled that shawn would even ask. he didn’t want to hurt him; he never has. hell, I was expecting lassiter to punch him. I was expecting him to say “gladly” but no. shawn had to push him over and over again because the truth is lassiter doesn’t hate shawn. he might even like him a little bit.

shassie where lassie starts noticing more and more often just how much shawn does NOT care about his own well-being. where lassie talks to him about it but shawn dodges ever giving a real answer because he can’t. because to him it’s no big deal that sometimes life doesn’t hold value to him; it’s just another thing to deal with, and if anything it makes him better at his job. shassie where it doesn’t work out because lassiter can’t worry 24/7, where he can’t tear himself apart waiting for shawn to start caring about himself the way that he does. where he’s never sure if shawn will walk through their shared apartment door at the end of the day because shawn doesn’t care if he makes it home or not.

shassie where lassiter doesn’t feel important enough to be loved by shawn. where he believes shawn may love a part of him, but never all of him. where lassie can’t sleep at night because what if shawn’s gone in the morning? where he makes excuses about the bags under his eyes that are less than flimsy; and easily seen through by shawn. shassie where shawn understands the fear of not being loved for what he is because, hell, that’s been his entire life. shassie where they learn to voice love and quiet doubts because they understand eachother above everything else. shassie where lassiter doesn’t have to worry about partial love and bitter kisses over divorce papers.

happy valentine’s day to the santa barbara polycule!!

:shawn is definitely wearing a ridiculous heart bedazzled tshirt and buying chocolates before going in to the precinct (all specified to his lover’s tastes; lassie likes the fruit chocolates, gus likes the almond chocolates, and jules likes fudge)

:gus has taken his first real day off to be around his lovers but gets drawn into a case by shawn anyways; but there’s nowhere else he’d rather be because when his lovers are distracted he gets to admire them unabashedly. he has to make them take a break though for the date he planned weeks ago, a painting class. him and juliet have a great time but shawn and lassie bicker the whole time.

:jules made customized valentines for each of them and has glitter glue smeared on her arms (shawn deduces what she’s done but keeps it to himself because she looks so excited to distribute them) she gives them to her lovers after they solve the case and they struggle not to cry because jules was always the best at wielding words honestly.

:lassie made dinner reservations for four later in the day at a nice restaurant and when they arrive each place at the table has a customized bouquet that makes it obvious who is sitting where because they’re so personalized. shawn gets a mix of white and pink carnations, jules gets roses and babies breath and gus gets tulips that are a sort of ombré of pink and red. yes. he is still embarrassed at the outpour of affection he recieves afterward.

!!they draw cards each v-day to see who’s doing what so they don’t double up because shawn complained too much one year that he couldn’t see his bedside table because “jesus christ who needs this many flowers babe(s)”

“if you spend another hour here, vick told me you’ll have to start paying rent.”

lassiter had been slumped over his desk for the past… well. shawn couldn’t exactly recall; all he knows is that this morning lassie was asleep on one of the waiting couches by the door when he came in, and god, that could NOT be comfortable.

“go home, spencer. don’t you have a crystal ball to ponder or something?”

the mildly pissed off response didn’t even compare to what carlton usually packed in terms of snappy remarks.. something was bothering him. shawn recollects himself to examine the man;

eyebags, crumpled files in the garbage can, a shaking hand wrapped around a nearly empty fountain pen, and a small downturn of lassiter’s lips.

a case had gone wrong. it had been lassiter’s fault, or so the man thought. but now he was staying up late hours and writing extra reports to compensate for this; and potentially to punish himself.

when shawn sat on the corner of the desk, lassiter couldn’t even muster the energy to scoff.. the psychic, a little downtrodden by this, snatched the pen from the other’s iron grip. shushing the protests before they started.

“shh, lassie, come on dude, when was the last time you went home?”

a fury was slowly being stoked behind tired eyes, “none of your business, spencer. if you had a real job, maybe you’d understand how people usually have to… well.. I don’t know….WORK!”

this sort of weird deflection was not dissuading shawn, if anything it was motivating him. lassie was clearly beating himself up to a degree not yet seen by spencer. one that proved dangerous to the detective’s health.

“ok buddy, I get it, you’re working hard; I can respect the hustle. but you’ve gotta see that at this point you’re not helping your prospects, only hurting them. and yourself.” shawn gathers the last few reports, almost as evidence and spreads them out in front of the man.. the handwriting is sloppy and the sentences either run on for ages or make no sense at all.

with a huff, carlton lays back in his chair for the first time in what must be hours and begins to examine them for himself.. the expression on his face slowly morphs from stoic, to surprised, to defeated as he lets the files slip from his finger tips into the bin beneath his desk.

shawn stands at the helm of the desk and holds out his hand to the other, gesturing mildly,

to his surprise, the older man threads his callused fingers between his own.. and the palm that kisses his is warm and tender from countless hours of writing.. something shifts in shawn’s chest and he finds that it’s not entirely unpleasant..

after the shock wears off.. shawn can’t stop himself from laughing gently at the soft nature of the gesture from lassie of all people..

“i wanted your keys, carlton.”

the detective seems a little shocked at his own actions, if not a bit pink at the realization of what exactly he just did. perhaps he would’ve put up more of a fight about shawn driving his car if he didn’t want to immediately change the subject.

removing his hand from it’s subconsciously executed hold, he digs his keys out from his internal suit pocket and lays them in the palm of the psychic’s hand.

“you need my address..?” carlton seriously doubts that shawn does but it feels almost courteous to ask..

“no, I’ve read your personal file.”

of course he had.
