Day 13 - Questions

I am in a current state of... confusion. I don’t know about you but what I know is what I feel. But it’s a need, to know, what’s this?

But I’m afraid to ask. I’m afraid to know. They say “if you don’t want to get hurt, if you aren’t ready for change, then don’t ask and just let everything in. If you want to be happy, then don’t ask.”

I don’t know if i’m ready today. But it’s a need so big I have to let out. So I wrote it in a song.

Day 11 - Fall For You

Here’s another original song. It was sitting somewhere and I thought why not shed some light on it? It was always fun for me to sing it. There are days, when i feel i’m indestructible Nothing could break me Then it'll rain, and i have, to hold on to you So that i wouldn't slip and fall

Ever since the Joseph Vincent cover, the song was stuck in my head, and I just HAD TO get it out, HAHAHA :)

I missed making videos and more legit arrangements, but right now I wanted to play and sing more than I wanna do videos, because playing and singing only requires 5-30mins of your time than a 2-day video. yea some passion right haha.

MEANWHILE, I have more songs (like this hahah) that I wanted to quick record soooooo here’s hoping I do them!

I SHOULD BE WORKING.

I was supposed to record this yesterday evening when fire broke the area beside our subdivision, and we had to temporarily evacuate our homes in case it spreads to our side. Thankfully firetrucks and firepeople came and washed the fire away. and it also rained. 

Now i’m supposed to work (at home) but I’m procrastinating in between moments. 

also wanna go to #inthemix because of james bay. and 1975. and panic.

Secret Someones

I remember roughly about 5 years ago, my friend @kamolsky​ showed me her:

and I was immediately hooked. had hit the subscribe button as fast as i can, and every now and then i’d go back to her video and just watch her and listen her sing that rendition of her song. It was SO good.

Fast forward to last week, I hear this on spotify:

And saved that song on my playlist.

NOW I was trying to look for the chords for it, and I stumbled upon the music video:

and THEN I tried to look for an acoustic version cause it was the first version I heard on spotify:

THEN... The way the lead singer sang, her face expression is so familiar.

I looked on their facebook page... and BAM. It was like a light had turned on and suddenly I can see. Had a bit more proof when I googled her name and BAM BAM. IT WAS HER. I have seen that set of photos before, when I googled her 5 years ago.

Leila Broussard. I have admired you and your singing and how you are so good, and now you have a band, and a beautiful song, and as a listener [and a fan of course] I am so very proud of your success. I have loved “Let You Go” and I listened to the rest of Secret Someones’s songs and they’re all so awesome. I hope for your continuous success and more songs <3

6 years ago when I was a little rascal in college, I had a chance to interview Ms. Erika Iris Simmons, or IRI5. We know her for making her Casette Tape Artworks:

This John Lennon is my most favorite of all her artworks. 

Her works also inspired Bruno Mars’s music video, “Just The Way You Are”:

Today not only she uses casette tapes for her portraits, but she had used different materials such as old video films, music sheets, old baseballs, and peanut shells. How cool is that?!

And yes, Ms. Simmons had granted me a chance to interview her for a bit. I’m reposting this from my old blog because this needs to be out in the open. It was also one of my first time interviewing someone, but she was kind enough to answer my ‘basic’ questions :) 

Trisha Laya: First, when did you start making your artworks? Erika Simmons: I have always been crafty, but I started pursuing art seriously about three years ago. TL: besides tape cassettes and video films, do you also use other materials in making your artworks? or do you even use other processes or medium in making artworks? ES: I use all kinds of things... old books, playing cards, wires, and I've started trying to make sculptures out of old lace too... I get too bored using the same thing all the time. TL: Why did you chose famous stars from the music industry for your works? ES: To be honest, the first cassette tape portrait I made was of Jimi Hendrix because I love his music and I thought his hair worked really well for the curly texture of the tape, but most of the other stars have been requests from people or commissions. TL: how or where do you get your inspirations from? ES: Mostly from reading and taking long walks. TL: can you share with me how you make your cassette tape artworks? ES: Every pieces is different. For some I glue the tape down flat, and in others I leave the tape curly and chaotic. An easy way to do it is to take a pencil and draw lightly on a canvas the shapes you want, then carefully glue down the cassette tape into the desired places. The tape is very fragile, but you can twist it and sculpt it to make it look the way you like. It takes some practice to understand all the ways you can use it. TL: did you knew that you were going to do this kind of art before? is what you are doing everything that you have imagined? ES: When I started making art I knew I wanted to make something that was really interesting, but I never thought I would make something that so many other people thought was interesting... I still have other techniques I want to try, so I still think it can be better. TL: do you love music? what type of music do you listen to? ES: I love all kinds of music, especially classical and electronic music. For my art though I love the idea of data - whether its recording tape or sheet music. TL: what was your initial reaction when you were first informed that your art will be inspired by Bruno Mars's music video? ES: I thought it was a great opportunity and I was happy to share my ideas with the director. But there is also a business side of things... as an artist you need to make sure you read contracts and don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. But I think the video turned out wonderfully and I'm just happy to have been a part of it. TL: have you ever tried making a self-portrait with your process? ES: No, I've never tried a self-portrait. TL: how long does it take you to make one artwork? ES: It depends... some small pieces take a few days. Others take about a month, working almost every day! They can take a very long time. TL: I understand that people send you items that they believe you can use to make your works. did you receive anything unusual or something cool or unique before? ES: People have sent me their old photos, home movies, old cassette tapes, graduation tassels, baseballs... all kinds of things. TL: what can you advice to students (and also to the people) who wants to pursue making artworks? ES: Try everything. When you make a mistake, take the courage to fix it; sometimes that is a better lesson. Make art everyday. Don't worry about finding a personal style, worry about pursuing your interests. If you intend to sell art, understand that you will have to make some things that you might not personally like. And finally: Its possible to make a living selling art without an agent or gallery representation, so don't put all your eggs in one basket!
