Shattered Trust

(part 2)

"I messed up, Eugene." Rapunzel was sitting on the steps of the throne room, her face buried in her hands. "He's never going to trust me again."

Eugene rested a hand on her back. "We all lied to him, Sunshine. We're all to blame."

Rapunzel rubbed her eyes. "You don't understand. I didn't just lie to him. I broke my promise. Again." She stared at the ground. "He probably hates me."

Quirin was still staring where Varian had been. He looked like a million conflicting thoughts were clashing in his mind. After awhile he looked towards Rapunzel and Eugene. "I know he's mad at us but he can't go near her."

Rapunzel looked at him. "Why?"

Quirin sighed. "I don't want her to come and seem like this wonderful person. I don't want him to get attached to her. Because then she'll leave again and he's going to get hurt."

Nigel watched them. He knew what the boy would do if he were left to his anger. He knew what would happen if he went unchecked. Nigel knew what he had to do if Corona were to remain safe.

Varian had no idea where he was going. He just knew he needed to get away from them. To clear his head.

And when I promise something, I never EVER break that promise.

Varian squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out her voice.

We'll fix this I promise.

I promise.

He needed to get away.

I promise.

To Rudigger.

I promise.

To his da-

He stopped. Not his dad. His dad was the one who'd lied to him. Everyone had lied to him. They all told him she was dead. But why?

He collapsed against a building and drew his knees up to his chest. He felt hot, warm tears spill down his cheeks.

I'm sorry, Varian. She'd said. I promise I won't ever to lie you again.

"Sorry, princess." He whispered, thoughts andn memories clashing together in his mind. "But I know firsthand how well you keep promises."

"He's not going to listen to me. He won't even stand there long enough for me to apologize." Rapunzel sat on her bed as she spoke to their new arrival. "But he might listen to you."

Cassandra crossed her arms. "Okay, I'll go talk to him but I don't know what you want me to say."

"Just... tell him I'm sorry. Tell him I want to talk," Rapunzel met Cass' eyes. "Tell him I'm worried."

Cass stared at Rapunzel for a moment. There was something deeper going on here. Something buried under the surface. She looked into her eyes and saw what Rapunzel was really saying. What she really thought.

Cassandra felt her heart twist in her chest as she realized what Rapunzel was actually worried about.

"Really!" Cassandra glared at her friend. "Do you really think so little of him to believe he would do something like that again?"

Rapunzel bit her lip. "You didn't see the way he looked at me. His eyes. He was so angry and hurt and-"

"And he has every right to be!" Cass snapped. She couldn't believe this. "Raps, you LIED to him. You broke your promise and his trust. Again."

Rapunzel opened her mouth to argue but no sound came out. Cass was right.

"I'm going to go see if he's okay. If he wants to talk to you I'll bring him here but if it doesn't..." she paused and played with the Cassandrium necklace Varian had given her. "Leave him alone. Give him space and time to think."

Rapunzel nodded and Cass left.

Varian didn't know what he was doing. Rudigger was sitting on the table watching him with worried eyes. He mixed together chemicals, not even bothering to see what they were. Unfortunately, nothing exploded. He really wanted something to explode right now.

He threw the beaker at the wall where it shattered and the formula inside started to sizzle. He stared at the mess before sighing and dropping onto the floor. This wasn't making him feel better.

Rudigger quickly joined him. He pawed at Varian's cheeck and cooed.

Varian laughed sadly at his attempts to make him feel better. He picked up the raccoon and buried his face in his soft fur. It provided a momentary second of comfort.

Then someone knocked on the door.

He sighed and stood up, walking over to it. "Dad, if that's you I really don't want to talk right no-"

He stopped when he was met with three guards and Nigel.

"What do you want?" He asked tiredly. "Did Rapunzel send you?"

Nigel peered into his lab and saw it in complete disarray. Nothing was intact save for for a set of automaton plans hanging on the wall. He naturally thought the worst.

"Take him."

Varian backed away. "What?"

The guards grabbed him and started dragging him back to the palace.

"Hey! What are you doing!" Varian tried to get away but to no avail. They were much stronger than he was. "I didn't do anything!"

Nigel ignored him. The best thing to do was ignore him.

They were halfway into town when they saw Cassandra walking down the road. She was headed towards Old Corona.

"Cass! Cassie!" Varian yelled out to her. "Help me!"

She turned and gasped in surprise when she saw what was happening.

"What is going on!" She demanded, stalking towards them. "Where are you taking him?"

Nigel shook his head. "He's going to the dungeon. For treason."

"What!" Varian stopped struggling for a moment. "I didn't do anything!"

Cass stopped. This is exactly what Rapunzel was worried about and Nigel wouldn't have done this if he didn't have a good reason.

"What exactly are your grounds for arresting him?"

"He had plans for those robots of his hanging in his lab. No doubt he was going to use them for evil again."

Cass felt her heart stop. He said he wouldn't use them again. He said he got rid of those plans. She drew back and let them take him.

"Wait no!" Varian continued to struggle. "It's not what you think, Cass!"

Cass looked away. Had Rapunzel been right to be suspicious of him? To worry he would do something like that again?

"Cassandra!" Varian screamed, his voice cracking. He desperately reached out for her, eyes filling with tears of betrayal as she watched them take him away. "Please! Cass, help me!"

After they took him she went back to Rapunzel.

The queen stood when she walked back in.

"Cass? Why are you back so soon? Did you find him?" Rapunzel stopped when she saw Cassandra was crying. "Cassandra? What's wrong? What happened?"

"Varian-"

Eugene burst into the room, breathing heavily. "Rapunzel I need you right now! It's Varian. Nigel had him arrested!"

"What? Why!" She turned to Cassandra who was starting to look scared. "Cass what happened?"

When she didn't answer, Rapunzel started running down to the dungeon. How did everything go so wrong?

Shattered Trust

"No! No, no!" Varian wrenched his arm away from Rapunzel. His eyes were filled with fury. A look she hadn't seen since the flower incident. "You lied to me! You all lied to me!"

Quirin tried to reach out to him. "We were only trying to protect you."

Varian turned his furious gaze on his father. "No. You were only trying to protect yourselves."

Eugene walked towards him, arms extended like he was trying to calm a raging horse. "Varian, we only did what we thought was be-"

"Best!? For who? Yourselves!" Varian pushed him away when he tried to get closer. "All my life I've wanted the chance to meet my mother and now that she's here you're trying to keep her away from me!"

Quirin looked at Rapunzel for help but the queen looked shattered. He sighed and stepped towards his son.

"Varian, please calm down. Let's just tall this through."

Varian felt something inside him snap and he looked at his father, the man who'd lied to him for sixteen years, the fire in his eyes blazing bright. "No. You do not get to tell me to calm down. All my life, you LIED to me. You told me she was dead!"

Quirin gazed at his son with tired eyes. "She left. She left us . . . you. She might as well have been."

Varian clenched his fist. They didn't trust him with the truth. They didn't trust HIM. He looked at Rapunzel, his eyes and fury hardening.

"And what about you? Why didn't you tell me the truth? Why didn't you trust me?"

Rapunzel curled in on herself, biting her lip and looking guilty. "I was afraid she'd take you away. I was afraid you would leave."

Varian felt his heart break. Rapunzel thought he would just leave with someone he barely knew? She thought he would leave his home for someone who was never there for him?

Tears stung in his eyes as he backed away from them. "I thought you trusted me. I thought we were friends."

Rapunzel gasped in shock. She looked into his heartbroken, shattered eyes. Eyes filled with hurt and betrayal.

"We... we ARE friends." She insisted, though it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself.

"Friends don't lie." Varian turned away from them and started walking out the door. "You promised you would never lie to me."

His words echoed in her ears.

You promised. You promised. You promised.

She felt tears stream down her cheeks as she watched him leave.

You promised.

She felt a hand on her shoulder.

You promised.

Eugene pulled her close and held her tight.

You promised.

"It's okay." Eugene whispered, rubbing her back. "This isn't going to turn out like last time."

"No." Rapunzel took in a shuddering breath, clenching her teeth as she remembered that awful day. "It's worse."

Shattered Trust

(part 3)

Rapunzel rushed down to the dungeon with Eugene and Cass following quickly behind.

She had to get there. She had to get him out. She couldn't lose him. She couldn't lose her friend. Not again.

She stopped in front of the cell that held him and her heart stopped beating for a moment.

This sight was so achingly familiar. The bars separating them and betrayal once again wedged into their friendship. He wouldn't even look at her. It was just like last time. The only difference now was, she was the one who'd done something wrong.

She turned to the guard holding the keys. "Let him out."

"Your majesty, with all due respect-"

"Let. Him. Out." Her voice and eyes were stern.

The guard nodded and unlocked the cell.

Varian stood up and brushed past them, not bothering to spare anyone a second glance as he left.

"Varian-" Rapunzel tried to grab his hand but he pulled it away. He looked at her, the earlier anger held in his eyes had been replaced with pure and utter pain and misery.

"Don't." Varian's voice was barely above a whisper. "Just. . . don't."

"Varian, please hear her out." Cass pleaded. She wanted to know what happened. Why Nigel did this. Why he did this.

Varian glared at her, the fury and resentment returning. "I do NOT want to talk to you, Cassandra. I BEGGED you for help and you turned your back on me."

She was silent. They were all silent as Varian started yelling again.

"Why!? You were my friend!" He turned away, tears pricking at his eyes. His voice got quieter. "Why?"

Were? You were my friend? Cass didn't know what to say. Varian was so filled with hurt and anger that it made her heart ache. They were the ones who caused that. They were the ones who hurt, betrayed, and lied to him.

He left and they couldn't do anything. They couldn't say they were sorry. They couldn't even get the chance to show they were. He left them feeling like they lost one of the most important people in their lives, forever.

Varian knew that his dad had gone back home, so he went to his room in the castle. Rapunzel let him stay there when his dad was away. That was the only thing he was grateful for right now. Well, accept for Rudigger.

Said raccoon was perched on his shoulder. Rudigger was the only constant in his life right now. The only person he could trust.

"I don't know what to do." He whispered, sitting on his bed. He felt so alone. Everybody he thought he could trust had either lied to him or betrayed him in some way.

His dad, Eugene, and Rapunzel all told him his mother was dead when she was here, in Corona. Cass hadn't helped him when he needed her. When he was being arrested for nothing.

"I feel so lost and alone, Rudigger." He felt tears coming to his eyes for the umpteenth time that day. "I feel like I can't trust anyone anymore."

Rudigger chittered and pawed Varian's cheek sadly. He didn't know what else to do. Usually when Varian was upset, he cried and talked to someone, but this time, he had no one to talk to.

After an hour of silent crying and staring into the middle distance, he wiped away his tears and took a deep breath.

"I want to find my mom. I want to meet her."

Shattered Trust (part 5)

“Why did you leave?”

Veronica pursed her lips and looked away. She couldn’t bear to see the hurt in his eyes. She sighed and carded her fingers through his hair.

“I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I thought you would be better off without me.” She brushed a tear away from his cheek. “I promise I will never leave you again.”

Varian hugged her, letting a few more tears fall. He had exactly what he wanted. How long would it last?

“Varian wasn’t in his room.” Rapunzel sighed and dropped onto her throne. “He might be in town today.”

Catalina and Angry looked at eachother confusedly. “Why is Varian so upset? We haven’t seen him in a few days, what happened?”

Rapunzel groaned and mentally slapped herself. The girls didn’t know.

“We uh... we lied to him. About something rather big and he’s really mad at us.”

Lance snorted from where he was sitting on the side. “’Mad is an understatement. I have not seen him this angry at anyone since... well, since I don’t know when.”

Rapunzel thought back to the day he stole the flower. “I have, and trust me, if we let him be alone for too long something bad could happen.”

Eugene cleared his throat and gave her a look.

“I didn’t mean like that. I was wrong to think he would do something like that again.”

Eugene nodded, apparently satisfied with her answer. “Alright, but I do think we should give him some space to clear his head.”

Varian immediately liked his mother. She was everything he’d thought she’d be and more. After he was done crying, they’d spent the day together. They got to know one another and it was great. That was when he found out she had tried to come back once when he was five.

“So, he wouldn’t even talk to you?” Varian asked her quietly.

Veronica nodded. “He was so mad. I mean, he had every right to be after I left without a word. And you... well, you weren’t there that day. I never got to see you.”

“What did you do?”

“Well, after your father yelled at me, I left. I had no reason to stay. He didn’t want me back in his life and I can’t really say I blame him.”

They both were silent for a moment before she asked him a question.

“How did you know I was here?”

“Monty told me. He was surprised he hadn’t seen us with you yet.” Varian bit back another wave of tears. “They- they lied to me. They all told me you were dead. When I asked why they lied, dad wouldn’t say anything. Rapunzel said she was afraid I would leave Corona with you.”

Veronica looked surprised. “Why would the queen think I would want to take you away?”

Varian laughed bitterly. “I don’t know. She’s never been this insecure about our friendship before. It’s almost like... like she’s jealous? I don’t know why. I mean, she has no reason to be.”

Veronica was silent for a moment. “Varian, you should talk to them. Perhaps this is the only way to make things right. For everyone’s sake.”

Varian nodded. He really didn’t want to but he knew she was right. He couldn’t keep ignoring his friends no matter how much he wanted and no matter what they’d done, they were still his family and he loved them. That would never change.

Varian and Veronica went to the palace later that day. Pete and Stan were pleasantly surprised to see him.

Pete hugged the young alchemist and it seemed like he was trying not to cry. “I’m so happy you aren’t trying to kill us right now!”

Varian pat his back awkwardly. “Yeah... me too?”

After releasing him, the two guards allowed them in the castle.

“Rapunzel is going to be so stoked to see you!”

Varian bit back a bitter comment. No matter what Rapunzel had done he had to keep a level head. He refused for things to turn out like they had last time.

They entered the throne room to find all his friends were looking anxious. Rapunzel most of all.

When she saw Varian she jumped up and ran to hug him but stopped short when he backed away from her. Instead she offered him a smile.

“Varian, I am so sorry.”

“For what?”

A look of confusion crossed her features. “W-what do you mean?”

“What are you sorry for? Lying to me? Letting Nigel lock me in a dungeon for something I didn’t do? Oh, or sending Cassandra of all people to talk to me.” The bitterness in his voice stung like venom. “Did you think I was going to go back to being a villain? Is that something you’re scared of?”

He expected her to deny it right away, but instead she turned her head away and bit back tears.

“I... Varian I...” She couldn’t even bring herself to say it.

Varian once again felt his heart shatter into a million pieces. Why was she so scared of him? Scared of him. One of his best friends, his basically sister, was scared of him. Scared he would turn to kidnappings and murder plots at the drop of a hat. Scared he would turn into a monster again.

“Okay.” Varian’s voice was barely over a whisper. He looked right at Rapunzel. He wanted to be angry at her. He wanted to yell and make her feel just as wronged and betrayed as he did. But one look into her eyes and he could tell she was already suffering tremendously from guilt. He didn’t want to add to that. “That’s okay. You don’t have to say anything.”

She was surprised by how soft his voice had gotten.

“I can tell we’re having trust issues.” Varian decided he would be the bigger person and make the first move to forgive. “But Rapunzel, you don’t have to worry about me like that. I’m not going to try and hurt you again.”

Rapunzel nodded and she knew he meant it. She took a step forward, arms out as she waited for Varian to accept the hug. Varian fell into her embrace and for a moment, everything seemed like it was going to be okay.

Veronica watched with a smile. It gave her no greater joy than to see her son surrounded by people who loved him.

The Nigel walked in and that moment ended.

“Your majesty, we went back to his lab and we found this.” Nigel marched forward and showed Rapunzel the automaton plans. “I have every right to believe he wants to use them for evil.”

Rapunzel stared at the plans but Varian wasn’t worried about her. He glared at Nigel.

“Did you break into my house?” He demanded angrily.

Nigel fixed a cold, steely glare of his own on the boy. “Don’t try to turn me into the bad guy. The evidence for your conviction is right here.”

Rapunzel slowly looked at Varian. “Var, what is this?”

Varian snatched the plans out of her hands and kept his glare at Nigel. “Do you want to know why I have these? Do you want to know what this is? I’m trying to help my village.”

Rapunzel stayed silent as Varian explained.

“I tweaked the design so that instead of them being made for battle, they’re supposed to be used for construction.” He crossed his arms. “I’ll take your apology now, Nigel.”

Nigel glared at him. “Do you truly expect me to apologize to you? How do we know you aren’t lying?”

Rapunzel stepped in, fixing her own glare on Nigel. “He’s not. I trust him.”

Nigel crossed his arms. “Forgive me for saying this your majesty, but trusting this boy is foolish and would only lead to the end of the kingdom.”

“Excuse me!” Rapunzel demanded, her gaze intensifying. “How dare you, Nigel! Varian has proven time and time again how trustworthy he is! How can you still not believe in him?”

“Forgive me, but you were quite certain he would return to his old ways when he left yesterday.”

“And that was my mistake. I shouldn’t have even entertained the thought.” She looked at Varian apologetically. “I’m sorry.” She looked back at Nigel, her glare returning. “But you do not get to go and arrest my friend because he yelled at me. He was angry and had every right to be.”

Varian watched Nigel’s face go red from anger and embarrassment. “But he’s attacked the kingdom before! Who’s to say he won’t do it again!”

Rapunzel grit her teeth. “That’s enough, Nigel.”

“Your majesty, he is a danger to Coro-”

“THAT IS ENOUGH NIGEL!” Rapunzel yelled, startling everyone in the room. “I want you to take a leave of absence.”

“What! For how long?”

She sighed and ran a hand over her face. “I don’t know!” Just, go. We all need to take a breather and I don’t want you two in the same room.”

“Then why send me off!”

“Because you’re being irrational and I don’t trust you around him right now!” That’s why.” Rapunzel crossed her arms. “Now, Nigel.”

The man grumbled under his breath but walked away, aggressively brushing past Veronica on his way out.

Varian let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding in. “Thank you.”

Rapunzel gave him a tight lipped smile. She was obviously still stressed out. “Of course. I’m sorry for everything that happened. I shouldn’t have lied or doubted you.”

Varian nodded. “And while all this was happening, I found my mom.”

Her eyes widened. “You... what?”

He pointed his head towards Veronica who took that as her cue to walk over.

She did and gave the queen a smile. “Your majesty.” She bowed her head. “Thank you, for standing up for my son. It... it means alot to me, to know that he has such a good friend.”

Rapunzel couldn’t decide between being shocked and faking happiness. The result was her staring blankly as everything Quirin told her ran through her mind. This woman seemed nice enough. But then again, so had Gothel.

She shook off her thoughts and gave her a smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Um... thanks for watching after Varian for the day. I know I was the last person he wanted to see.”

If his mother noticed her apprehension, she didn’t comment on it. “Yes, well. I hope you two can patch things up. I’d hate for you to end your friendship over me.”

Rapunzel was startled by this. It was an odd thing to say. The queen looked into her eyes but only saw warmth and motherly affection.

“Uh... right. Yes. I mean, I love Varian. I would never let that happen, of course.” She awkwardly stumbled over what to say. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of the woman.

“Rapunzel,” Varian’s voice was soft and his eyes were kinder than she’d seen them in a while. “I know my dad probably said some awful things about her but, she’s changed. I trust her.”

Rapunzel resisted the urge to tell him he’s barely known her for a day. But, knowing the reaction that would entail, she instead smiled and nodded. “Okay. If you trust her then I do too.”

Shattered Trust

(part 4)

Quirin was trying his best to avoid her. She was staying in the capitol city, so it wasn't very hard and he knew Varian wouldn't want to talk to him, so he didn't have to go check on him. He trusted Rapunzel to do that.

Speaking of Rapunzel.

The queen was doing her research on Veronica Rudiger. She spoke to everyone who'd known her. Her parents, Xavier, Monty. And, she went through Herz De Sonne's Journal. What she found there was intresting.

Apparently she'd dissapeared two years after Varian was born. That was odd. Quirin told her that his mother left when Varian was a baby, not a toddler. Another thing she found curious about the whole thing was the painting hanging in Quirin's home. It was of him, baby Varian (he was so cute!), and Varian's mother. They all looked so happy. What had happpened?

She had to get to the bottom of this.

Varian was wandering around Corona looking for his mother. There were a few problems with that. He had no idea where to start. He didn't even know her name. He'd only seen a picture of her but that had been painted when he was a newborn. So much could've changed in sixteen years.

"Come on." Varian whispered, looking around the town square. "Where are you?"

That's when he bumped into someone. They both hit the ground with a thud.

"Oh, I'm so sorry young man. I wasn't looking where I was going." The woman was suddenly by his side, helping him up. "Are you okay?"

Varian gave her a grateful smile. "Yes, thank you."

"That's good." Her eyes held such a soft and familiar warmth to them. "My name is Veronica."

"Mine's Varian."

He wasn't expecting her to suddenly look scared. Scared mixed with something else. The fear in her eyes suddenly melted away and was replaced with tears of joy as she gently cupped his cheek.

"Varian?"

"Yes?"

A gasp of a laugh escaped her lips. "My boy."

Varian suddenly realized who was in front of him. "Mom?"

She smiled and hugged him. "Oh, Varian. I've been looking everywhere for you."

Varian felt tears come to his eyes. He'd found her. He'd found his mom.

She pulled away to look at him, gently caressing his cheek with her thumb. "Look at you. All grown up."

Varian placed his hand over hers. "I can't believe I found you."

"I'm never going to let you go, ever again." She kissed his forehead. "I promise."

For some reason, Varian didn't pull away when she said that. He wanted his mother in his life. He wanted to believe she could keep that promise. That she WOULD keep that promise.

"I only have one question." He looked into her eyes. "Why did you leave?"
