Whenever I’m about to introduce someone new to SHINee, I always struggle with 3 things:
Do I start in chronological order? To me, it feels natural to start with Replay. It’s their debut song, the one that started it all, and Replay by itself is a great song. Plus, starting with Replay allow you to then move in chronological order, showcasing SHINee’s growth and changes over the years. The only downside is that Replay is an older song and might not appeal to someone with a modern taste in music.
Do I pick an OT5 song? As a Blinger and Shawol since 2013, I feel loyal to 5HINee. While the Comebacks that SHINee has made post 2017 are great, it feels wrong to show someone a SHINee song that doesn’t include Jonghyun because, in a roundabout way, I feel as if I’m erasing their origins, the fact that SHINee is 5 and always will be 5. Pre 2017 SHINee is the real SHINee in my mind. Yet, I also know that SHINee has good tracks from post 2017 that shouldn’t be ignored simply because they aren’t 5HINee songs.
Do I choose a title track or a B-side track? This, I believe, is a problem unique to Shawols because not many groups can say that their B-side tracks are on the same level, if not better than their title tracks. SHINee, however, has some of the best B-side tracks in the industry, which, for someone that is trying to find a SHINee song to introduce to someone else for the very first time, makes that decision very difficult. Most of SHINee’s B-side tracks don’t have a music video, so they not be as stunning as the title tracks.
