✨SHINee Atmos First Listen 🌤️

Atmos- I love how this sounds like View’s cousin. It’s such a good sound for SHINee and I love that they are back at it! I love all the (lol) atmospheric sounds in the background- like I get this rumbly thunder feeling and then that high dreamy sound- so good! And there goes Taem? hooting and hollering in the back! Maybe it’s Jinki, not sure lol.

HOURS- A SHINee track where Kibum intros in English? Yes please. I love how groove this is. I want to get up and dance to it! Jinki is doing some really interesting layering sounds in there and it’s so good. Ok, HOURS is going straight to the top of the playlist!

Possibility- Ooh, Minho’s got some strong verse lines here- and I can here him powering through the whole chorus too! Go Minhooo! I like the nanana chorus. I keep feeling like there’s a SHINee song this matches with too but I can’t pin it down.

Anti Believer- Woah, what a contrast between Jinki’s warm opening and Taemin’s next line in there! Minkey rap? Yes please! Jinki with this vocal trumpeting feeling that’s capped off with Kibum’s high staccato notes- loving it. It’s a good combination of everyone’s voices- a little overwhelming but also like, in that woven together way. (If that makes sense?)

Still Raining- Mmm, a slinky sort of song! Lots of Jinki vocals. Lots of group harmonies. There’s a nice tension that builds up to the chorus and then everyone gets to show off in their own special ways- very much a fan of this SHINee speciality!

Thousand Miles Away- I’m really pleased there’s as much lines for Minho here as any other member. I love them all singing together in the chorus. 🥹 I keep getting distracted from the vocals or the music because I have this huge feeling of heavy nostalgia in my chest. I really want to know the words to this, I have a feeling it’s going to be sweet like Days and Years. Go OFF Jinki my man! Kibum leads this closing chorus so well. Oh! This is like Minho’s most syrupy warm tone to finish us off! And Taem trailing off up to the sky. I like it. A lot. 👏🏻

Final thoughts: I want to listen to this album more. And more and lots. It’s been a long time since a SHINee album felt like a true *core* SHINee album, but this one does. I may not have gotten my R&B track like I was hoping for, but boy- did I get a return to the house style of Odd album and View which is another one of SHINee’s core strengths. The album feels like it moves really well between tracks too- nothing feels like I got slapped from one reality to another vastly different one. It feels tight and cohesive. But also fun and warm. Everything my boys do best. I’m going to enjoy going over this album over and over again this summer. Summers back and so is the eternally youthful and beautiful SHINee.

Persuasion's first three chapters are brilliant. They almost entirely ignore Anne, as if the narrative itself has joined forces with her family in making her "only Anne," an inconsequential afterthought who must always give way to her father and sister.

In these chapters, we learn all about Sir Walter's history and present-day concerns. We even learn all about Elizabeth's hopes and disappointments in the realm of romance. If you knew nothing of the story, you would likely assume she is going to be the main character and her path toward marriage the main plot.

Anne's love story, which is what the whole book is actually about, isn't introduced until chapter 4.

And yet, it is not missing from the first three chapters. There are references to it hidden throughout, a presence lurking in the background, even though as a first time reader you couldn't see it.

The reference to Anne "happening to be not in perfectly good spirits" one winter in Bath is a reference to her devastation after her breakup with Wentworth.

Anne's casual knowledge of what Admiral Croft has been doing shows she's been keeping track not just of Wentworth but of his family all these years, and thus how much she still cares about him.

The way she holds back from naming Mr. Wentworth, Frederick's brother, even though she knows exactly who Mr. Shepard is talking about, shows how greatly the whole affair still pains her, that she doesn't want to even speak his family name and/or doesn't want to remind everyone of her past connection with him.

I love how Jane Austen weaves these details in but makes no effort to draw our attention to them, as I feel most authors would do. They're just casually there like Easter eggs for repeat readers to find. If you don't pick up on them, the story still works fine, but they are there to make it even more full and rich and real if you do notice them. It's masterful writing.
