Sayyid Ahmad bin Omar al-Hindwan, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"If you wish to know your rank, look at how you respond when someone spits at you. If you are happy and do not retaliate, then you are in the station of excellence (ihsan). If you dislike it but endure it without retaliation, then you are in the station of faith (iman). If you dislike it and respond only to the same extent, then you are in the station of Islam. And if you exceed and retaliate beyond what was done to you, then you are in the station of the sinners."
