Inky and Kaden’s Sortings: A Masterpost Update [2022]
Because Tumblr burped and @sortinghatchats disappeared, Inky and Kaden have had to build it back up from scratch. That means my old post, from 2017, has a bunch of broken links now. But never fear! I’ve spent the past few years tracking down every last reblog on this site with an unusable ‘search’ function.

Zhu-Double Snake, very obviously. She explicitly loves two people other than herself and likes one more, and while Snake primaries can like and love a large amount of people the small amount makes it clear that she is loyal to herself first, then her people, and not a group. And she finds it easy to change into who she needs to be, not viewing it as a change of self.
Ouyang-I thought at first a Double Snake, like Zhu, but I think now he is a Snake Bird. He’s a lot less able to improvise than Zhu. He’s always planning everything to the smallest detail. He also has an Exploded primary. He, like Zhu, has one desire, but, unlike her, he is willing to hurt the one person he loves for that goal. There is nothing left for him but that, which is a super sad way of living.
Wang Baoxiang-Like Ouyang, he has a Bird secondary. I actually think that this is one of the reasons that Ouyang relates, though he doesn’t realize this reason. Wang’s incessant planning at his desk may be less ‘manly’ than Ouyang’s incessant war planning, but they are similar. His primary was harder for to figure out but I think that he is a Double Bird (Burnt primary).
(spoilers) Ma Xiuying-Was there ever a stronger Badger primary? She helps change who Zhu is through this. At the end, yes, she chooses Zhu above her ideals, but I think it is possible to see that as her dehuminizing everyone except Zhu. As for her secondary, she and Zhu seem to be entirely on the same page through this and it’s why their relationship teasing works. In conclusion: Badger Snake.
Xu Da-Like Zhu, Ouyang and Ma his primary practically screams itself to the world, but his is a Bird primary. He has set ideas about the rules he lives his life by and when he accidentally breaks one of them he feels that he has to change his whole self. As for his secondary, we don’t see his do or decide much so I’m not going to comment on that.
Esen-I was thinking Badger primary for him at first, based on the way that both Ouyang and Wang describe him as friendly and outgoing, but the more I thought about the more I realized that Ouyang and Wang were just extroverts describing an introvert. He feels loyal to his group because that’s the right thing to do, but when push comes to shove he has his people and an order within those people. I think that he is a Snake (Lion model) Lion.
( @wisteria-lodge for the character sorting post?)
Round two of sorting Tanz der Vampire’s characters using the Sorting Hat Chats model!
For those unfamiliar, Sorting Hat Chats is a deeper, more nuanced sorting system using Harry Potter’s one as a basis. Over time it evolved into a handy basic tool for fictional characters’ analysis, since it makes you reason about WHY a character does something (the primary house), and HOW do they do it (the secondary house).
If you’re interested or have trouble understanding the terms I’ll use, here you can find the basics on SHC’s tumblr, and here is a slightly different explanation by wisteria-lodge (I personally find this one easier to understand, but that’s a matter of personal taste).
Please note that, since this is a live musical, the same character can change a bit depending on the actor, the direction, even from one performance to the other.
This is meant to be as much as possible a generic analysis, if your favorite performer gives them a different twist that’s cool and valid and the same is true if you interpret the characters and their actions differently than I do! Either way, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
This turned out way longer than I planned, so l have to split it across multiple posts. You can find the first one, sorting Alfred and Professor Abronsius, here, and the third and final one featuring Herbert and Graf von Krolock is here.
Now, let’s get to Sarah and her family! (and Magda!)
Magda
Magda surprised me by being the show's true double Bird!
She's clearly part of Chagal's household, but seems to be a set apart from them and not really belonging to the broader villager group, either. This doesn't seem to bother her, or at least it's not a focus for her character.
What we do see plenty of is Magda reacting to the consequences of other characters' actions and adjusting to them, changing her worldview if needed. "Tot zu sein ist komisch" is basically Magda reevaluating her position in the world now that one of the major players in it (for better and for worse) is dead and re-examining their relationship now that it has reached an end.
We also see this in the second act, with her adjusting well to being a vampire and the implication of the finale that she's one of the leaders or at least vocal supporters of vampires conquering the world (which requires a further paradigm shift). She's very centered and good at adapting by changing how she sees herself in the world.
She's not good at improvising, though. We see her going to visit Chagall's corpse well-prepared (at least considering her knowledge), cross in hand, but when it doesn't work she doesn't know how to improvise or come up with another plan on the fly. She definitely works hard and is generally pleasant towards others but I get more of a "big picture" gal feeling from her, so I'm inclined to sort her as a Bird for her secondary, too. One that does get very little chances to learn, gather information/tools and spread her wings until she gets turned into a vampire and will probably take a bit of time to understand how to user her tools, but a Bird nonetheless (and this fits well with her as one of the minds behind the vampires' world domination plans).
Chagal and Rebecca
There's no doubt that Chagall's one redeeming quality is sincerely loving his daughter, even if the love becomes possessiveness and jealousy. He cares more about her than his own safety, his community, or his ideals. He's definitely a Snake.
I think he's also a Snake secondary. He's very good at appealing to people, figuring out what they want, and he does so by doing quick reads and adapting to new situations or trying a new approach if his first try doesn't work, rather than by getting to know them over time, which makes me think Snake rather than Badger. I also unironically think this makes him like his job (which he seems to genuinely enjoy) and good at it!
Rebecca is difficult to sort because we see so little of her. I am inclined to say she's a primary Snake, too, because she definitely cares about Sarah and her husband, and her husband not prioritizing and supporting her is clearly a source of conflict and distress. This actually makes for a sad situation, where they maybe were each other's special person when younger, and then over time this changed and now their relationship is one-sided or at least not balanced, but they both love their daughter very much (Rebecca in an healthier way) and this is what keeps them together. Also, once Sarah has disappeared into the forest and Chagall is dead her final words are "Now I'm alone" despite having (one believes) some friends and acquaintances among the villagers. But they're not her chosen people, so they don't really count.
I think Rebecca is a Lion secondary: we see her being quite direct and a woman of action. I can't say if this is her "true" primary or a model she had to adopt in order to handle her husband, but it's what we see through her actions on stage without something else to contradict or add depth to it. I get a very “what you see is what you get” feel from her, and being kinda unapologetic in her actions.
Sarah
Our dear girl Sarah is definitely a handful! She knows what she wants, and she wants it now. She's stubborn and direct, in a delightful subversion of the ingenue.
At a superficial level she reads like an immature Snake that wants to enjoy life and put herself first, always changing who count as her person/people almost as if looking for the one that "fits". I think this is due to her parents being both Snakes primaries, and thus this being something she internalized without noticing.
But I think that at her core she's almost raw feels, as is very evident in "Die Roten Stiefel", and this is exacerbated by her being a teen AND having been locked up and lonely. And when she gets a chance to do and feel freely, that's the first thing she does: "Jetzt tu ich was ich will/Jetzt will ich was ich fühl".
It depends a bit on each actress' personal interpretation, but at times you can see her getting almost overwhelmed by her own feels and impulses in the first act, almost as if she could not resist them even if she wanted. In the second half she's a bit more collected, but still leading with what she feels is the right thing to do and refusing to budge an inch.
So yeah, Sarah definitely reads like a Lion primary to me, one that believes in freedom and love and living life to the fullest.
She's also a very direct person, she definitely does NOT plan in advance and just kinda runs with it. She does show a bit of improvisation, something she's probably picked up from her father, and she’s definitely good at “lowering the volume” when the situation requires it, but I think at her core she's a double Lion: she finds the most direct path to her objective and she follows it, and making her deviate from her decision is very, very hard (as Alfred learns).
TL;DR
Magda is a double Bird that can finally expand her worldview and knowledge after being turned into a vampire
Chagal is a (toxic) double Snake
Rebecca is probably a Snake/Lion
Sarah is a double Lion who picked up a bit of Snake from her parents
