Nunnally laughs: at his words, at the scolding, at the situation itself. It all seems ridiculous. Almost impossible that the man before her could be so like her father, and yet so unlike him. But perhaps it is not the men who differ so much, but her own reactions. The way she allows herself to respond to each of them.
She knows he pretends (?) not to look, and yet, if asked, he would notice and understand more than if he truly watched her. He dismisses her, and she finds she does not want to be dismissed.
“And what if the heroine doesn’t want to go downstairs…?” – Nunnally teases – “Imagine the scandal, if she chose to fall in love with the villain and set aside her life to stay with him.”
Of course, that is not the case. Of course, that is not what is happening. And yet, she feels a flicker of disappointment.
“Was I such a disturbing guest that you wish me to leave already?”
