She Makes Comics documentary makes me cry every time. And in a lot of ways, I feel personally connected to it because I felt my calling found me the way Buffy became a slayer. I can’t fight away the real passion I have for being creative and being a woman while doing it. In 2014, I found a She Makes Comics shirt at Savers in the men’s section and I about died at how cool it looked. I wore that shirt to a meeting for the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival only to be informed it was a documentary. At that very event, I was able to buy the dvd and watch it. I swear, no matter how many times I watch it, I cry. Heaps of history over a love for creativity and innovation that isn’t common knowledge. Fast forward to this year, being apart of very motivated group like GRRLS and VAGINA, I finally pitched it and watched it follow through. The generous producer of the film, finally agreed to let us screen it for free. Rocky and rushed, but nonethless, the night finally got its bearings. And when I heard the crowd applaud and looked around the room at also the similar tearing up I felt, I knew that something magical happened to me and the audience here. We as women creators in all forms of art, are not alone and not starving. We are more hungry than ever for success in constructing voices and building authentic forms of fandom. And all because of a shirt and my dream, did last night’s event snowball into this. My peers, local parents, and their daughters gave this a shot and came out with not only an eventful Friday night, but one with personal evolution for women in the audience with untapped potential.
