If you are willing to infodump, can you talk about young Doc from the game? He's one of my favorite characters from it : )

CAN I EVER. I absolutely don't blame you, young Emmett Brown is one of the absolute best things the game gave us right up there next to Trixie Trotter. I believe I've already mentioned his introduction, but it's still such a fantastic and hilarious establishing moment for who this boy is in comparison to the Doc[s, if you include 1955 Doc] we've gotten to know so far. Sure, 1955 Doc was skeptical once Marty brought up time travel, but one, Marty had to actually say something to make Doc think he was being messed with, and two, he was actually perfectly willing to be party to Marty before that moment.. even if it was just to drag him into an experiment. It was still immediate "acceptance" of a sort [and even acceptance afterwards, as we all remember how quickly 55 Doc and Marty slid back into their roles].

Emmett? Oh, no no.

Doc: Don't worry Marty, I was very easygoing as a child, it won't be a problem at all.

Emmett, rebuffing this random other kid he doesn't know in seconds:

It's a work of art. Doc immediately humming when Marty comes back to report this like "oh yes I forgot" just adds to it. Magnificent.

But even past that! Once Marty befriends him- through a bit of lying, yes, but we'll get to that- it's such an interesting new dynamic. And not just between the two of them, but we just get to see so much more of who Emmett is- or, was, such is the fun of a time travel franchise.

So you have to know going into this that I, alongside my partner, have very fervently held the belief of Marty and Doc being ADHD-autistic solidarity, respectively. Got it? Good. Not that I presume it to explain everything about his behavior of course, nor do I know whether it will come up specifically as I let my brain wander, I just think it's important to establish. Now, let's begin :)

We know for a fact that Doc didn't really have friends for a long time. Emmett is our view into this- our view into MANY things about him actually, and it's fascinating both for that and for getting to see him again. Like! There's no doubt he's friendly! There's that capability there, once Marty breaks through- which is monumentally harder to do now than we have ever been shown or told it has been for the Doc Marty typically knows, which we get such an explanation for in not only the knowledge that he doesn't really have friends, but also. Like. I gesture so so so emphatically to his dad. We'll either get to that or when I eventually replay the game and liveblog deeper thoughts I will but absolutely rest assured I have thoughts and feelings about Mr. Brown. They are very aggressive :) But Emmett's prickliness and distrust disappearing almost instantly when he believes he's found not only a fellow scientist but someone who wants to see and spread his work... magnificent. Emmett, much like he is later in his life, is incredibly into science, and really really wants to share the experience with people unapologetically. Of course, safely, too, and to. Y'know. People who want to hear it and are not going to tell him to leave. Which does make the available pool rather small. Luckily Marty is here :)

There's also elements to Emmett that I'm absolutely in love with from a character standpoint, like how hand in hand his brutal honesty and utter trust in Marty are. If he thinks a plan is stupid he is going to make that so incredibly clear, instantly. If Marty is bad at lying and yet still claims that totally wasn't the plan Emmett just Believes This in the same breath.

“???? Marty tell me THAT isn’t the plan.”

“It. Isn’t. It’s not the plan, no no, that’d be. That’d be stupid.”

“Pff, yeah. Good thing we wouldn’t come up with stupid plans.”

[Make no mistake Marty is really bad at lying. He's kind of always been? His lies largely only work on people his age with whom he's built good rapport or who really want to believe him (Emmett when Marty says he's from that science group, George who already wants to date Lorraine, etc.) and on Biff, who is demonstrably Not Bright. The scene in I believe the final episode with Marty at the expo is incredibly funny to me because he tries to lie to every adult in that building and Trixie, Arthur, and Edna all call his bluff in under a minute, largely on account of Marty going in strong and then just. Falling apart. This boy wasn't built for social deception. I love him very much.]

Another of the things I think about so so often is when Marty tells him the truth, right at the end of their first adventure together, and you can tell it really hurts him. But then, even though Marty was there under false pretenses, he still helped, and that’s still his friend now... and Emmett choosing to explain the tips of the rocket drill to him anyway.... man. Granted, I do believe they ought to get a little time to talk about all the lying Marty does, alongside just. Things in general, but we also kind of all know- and I think Emmett figures out, at least a little bit, by the end- there’s only so much honesty Marty can afford to give him. The best friends across the whole space-time continuum....

But MAN can we talk about the Edna bit too. It’s more of Emmett just being really desperate for positive approval- again, I point oh so desperately at his stupid dad- that he gets so wrapped around Edna’s finger. To keep a point I could scream about short, being a victim of abuse once makes you far, far more likely to easily fall to it again, especially when you are literally still in the first one and do not have any kind of outside voice to try to draw you away. Doc as we know him had plenty of time once he was away from his dad to build that sort of inner strength and strength of self- Emmett here? No time at all. Marty was gone for... I can’t recall the exact amount, a few months I think? And Edna’s false positive attention was something Emmett wanted so badly just like when Marty appeared. But, well, as we all know, Edna had nowhere near the good intentions for Emmett in mind that Marty did. It’s a lot of convincing, and the scene on the clock tower... it hurts. “You care about me.” “I LOATHE you!”

IT’S. There’s a lot of Marty being brought up as I shout about this but in my defense it is increasingly difficult to talk about these two separately <3 Let’s see, what sort of thoughts have I got left...

I love love love getting to hear what sort of music Emmett enjoys- the fact that he likes Trixie’s music is so fun, and the knowledge that Doc has always loved music around while he’s working and then Marty coming into his life is such a fantastic full circle.

That sequence of Emmett using an argument with his dad to guide Marty around the lab to do the experiment properly was so. It was both incredibly anxiety inducing my first time around [as I tried desperately to apologize to this boy every time he came down the stairs to tell me to be more careful as I was figuring it out, pff] but also so [slightly morbidly] funny. Emmett planning on the fly like “just trust me on this I Have An Idea” and the idea is shouting a family argument at a loud enough volume for Marty to not only hear it but need to listen for it to work. The awkwardness there that Emmett’s just utterly chill with. “Nah it’s fine. This is a normal Tuesday.”

HIS FLIGHT OUTFIT this isn’t necessarily a character trait past what he dresses as and it’s simply what he thought necessary for the experiment but it is so fun. He looks adorable. The scarf. The goggles. The yellow and blue is a really great color combination for him.

How even while wrapped around Edna's finger, he's mentioning every other sentence that the device she has him building isn't real science, and you can tell he's really not feeling it. And then, conversely, the joy later on when he decides he's scrapping it and ESPECIALLY the line where he says science should be wild and unpredictable or else where's the fun?

I... believe I ought to stop there! That's my first run of just incredibly scattered thoughts on little Mr. Emmett Brown, but as with pretty much anything I'm sure I'll have more to say in the future. AND SORRY FOR THE WAIT ON THE QUESTION ANSWERING swear on my life I see yall I simply function on . Some kinda way. Hopefully this satiates for a bit til I DO get to that replay or otherwise find time or reason to run my mouth again <3
