This is a Sheaffer Slim Targa S680s deep brushed silver plated Lame finish fountain pen in c. 1984-1985. It’s a 5 3/8 inch long cartridge / converter pen with chrome plated trim. It has a faceted band at the base of the cap lip. This more slender version of the Targa uses specific slim cartridges and converter. This is a Sheaffer Targa Model 1003 Matte Black with 23 karat gold electroplated trim c. 1989 to 1998. There are two versions of the Targa model 1003. This is the later version which has a gold plated cap top ornament. The earlier c. 1980 to 1988 version has a matte black cap top ornament. Both versions feature the Sheaffer Inlaid 14 karat gold nib. The section has a single gold plated trim ring. On this version, the top and bottom of the barrel have gold plated trim rings. The cap top and barrel end have flat round black inserts. The back side of the cap top ornament is stamped SHEAFFER U.S.A. The nib is stamped SHEAFFER, 585, and 14K. Matching rollerball pens, ballpoint pens and pencils were made. This is a Sheaffer Sentinel Matte Black fountain pen model SJ1X-M c. 1991. This 5 1/4 inch long cartridge pen has a matte grey enamel cap and barrel finish with gold electroplated trim. It’s made in Japan by Sailor and uses the same Sheaffer Skrip Slim ink cartridges as with the Slim Targa. The cutout ‘S’ in the clip stands out from other Sheaffer models. The earliest known advertisements for this model range are from 1984 showing a brushed chrome ballpoint and pencil set. Fountain pens of this line don't appear until about 1991 and very few advertisements are found. Included instructions give no indication that these pens were sold with converters or how to use one with the pen. The stainless steel gold plated nib is stamped SHEAFFER over F-4 over M. Nibs were available in extra fine, fine, medium and broad points. The pen appears in the 1991 Sheaffer catalog for $32 along with matching rollerball and ballpoint pens and a matching pencil. Available finishes in 1991 were Stainless Steel, Gloss Black, Gloss Burgundy, Gloss Blue, Gloss Grey, Matte Black, Matte Burgundy, Matte Blue and Matte Grey. The Stainless Steel models were slightly less expensive, with the fountain pen retailing for $25. Classic Pens developed the pen with Sheaffer and the Murelli R S.A.R.L. engraving company of France to create a Vannerie (basketweave) pattern on the sterling silver Sheaffer Targa cartridge / converter fountain pen with gold plated trim. The Targa by Sheaffer was launched in 1976 and is regarded as a modern classic. It is 5 ¼ inches long and offered in an edition of 250 pens, each laser engraved on the cap ornament with the CP1 logo and the individual limited edition number. The cap band is engraved with the Sheaffer name and the pens carry the London Assay Office sterling silver mark. The standard nib offered was a medium 14 karat gold nib, but any Targa nib could be exchanged onto this pen. Originally sold in Sheaffer gift boxes.
