Congratulations to Olalekan Jeyifous and Amanda Williams on receiving the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs inaugural She Built NYC commission to create a new monument in Prospect Park honoring Shirley Chisholm! Here’s a preview of Jeyifous’ #MTAArts commission to be installed later this spring at the 8th Avenue (N) station in Brooklyn. His work synthesizes cultural expression in the form of vernacular architecture and food, connecting it to the people who live and work in this diverse Brooklyn neighborhood.

That’s why we launched the #SheBuiltNYC campaign to honor more women and people outside the gender binary in our public spaces. Day 69. There are hundreds of statues in New York City. Just 5 depict actual historical women: Joan of Arc, Gilda Meir, Gertrude Stein, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harriett Tubman. An initiative called “She Built NYC,” aims to change that paltry total by commissioning and installing new monuments that honor women. First on the list: Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress. In 1968 she was elected to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District. She ran for the Democratic nomination in 1972. In 2015 she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
