Charles Sheeler, who was born on this day in 1883, was a painter, photographer, and Philadelphia native who became widely regarded as an important American Modernist. He was among the artists who developed a style known as Precisionism, which was characterized by sharp pictorial definitions and contrasts, extreme Realism or Cubist-derived abstraction, and a focus on American regional landscapes or cityscapes.
