This week has been #sheepweek and so we thought it fitting to #flashback this Friday to Spring lambing (swipe 👈🏼👉🏼). Sheep are amazing animals and contrary to popular belief their wool is not scratchy. The cause of scratchy wool is how it was (or wasn’t) prepared before spinning into yarn. Being conservationists by trade we thought it important to find a breed that may be at risk of extinction. When we bought our ladies, Southdown sheep were on the “watch” list, now just one year later their breed is recovering. We only have a small flock of nine, but It’s wonderful to see farmers and homesteaders take action to save at risk breeds. There are several still on the “critical” list, and even more on the “threatened” list. As consumers, the call to “shop small” or “shop local” means so much more than helping out small retail businesses. Small scale farming and homesteading fall into the small business category and the majority are trying to do their part to move away from huge commercialism that has put so many breeds at risk; they’re trying to conserve livestock breeds, and in turn preserve a lifestyle. Homesteading is a special way of life that everyone can be a part of even if you don’t have livestock yourself. We enjoy sharing about our small homestead and hope you’ve come to enjoy it too.
