Nick is good at putting pieces together from a scene and his knowledge of people and their motivations, and is able to build up and play out a scenario with scary accuracy. Having someone to bounce his ideas off helps, but if he’s left alone he’ll improvise. The longer he gets stuck on a sequence of events or a motivation, however, the more he mumbles. And the more it begins to irk him, then gets into character acting it out to try and make it make sense. And thus, more than once, Sole has walked in on a veritable one-man broadway show starring the very frustrated detective trying to play increasingly incongruous characters.

Actually, I hope I’m not bothering you, but that also kinda makes me wonder WHAT the druids are. She’s Altean, she has alchemy, fair enough. But then how do they do what they do and keep up with her and do what they do? Do you think they could be resurrected Alteans, or the captured survivors or descendants of the Alteans left scattered across the universe after the fall of Altea? Are they just the Galra equivalent of alchemists? If so, how come we didn’t hear of them pre-betrayal?

I’ve thought a lot about Haggar’s druids and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t post about them sooner. I didn’t have time to take screenshots from both Galaxy Rangers and Robotech to help describe where I’m coming from with this…but there is a scene in VLD S1 where Haggar is surrounded by floating purple crystals that appear to have something inside of them and when I first saw that it reminded me of Queen of Crown from Galaxy Rangers.

The Queen of the Crown is an evil space sorceress that combines occult science with magic, and she scours the universe looking for new species that can power her “Psycho Crypt.” The Psycho Crypt is a place where she creates her Slaver Lords, which are semi-autonomous extensions of her will.

Excuse the play button in the image above, I didn’t have time to scrum through 50+ episodes of Galaxy Rangers to find this great image of a Slaver Lord again.

That big gem on the Slaver Lord’s chest is a Psycho Crystal. It contains the psychic energy/soul of the Queen’s victims. In the case of some species (e.g. the Gherkin), it takes dozens of them to create one Psycho Crystal, whereas humans are a 1:1 deal. The Gherkin race nearly goes extinct due to the Queen’s thirst for Psycho Crystals. When the Queen of the Crown is creating one of these crystals, the process is reminiscent of transmutation/alchemy, and the scenes are not that different than what Haggar does in VLD (or as she did in DotU).

Going from that, and knowing that some kind of Pollux reference would have to show up at some point in the story, my thought had been that Haggar had been hunting down surviving Alteans to corrupt via transmutation into the Druids. And also, that Lotor had helped her initially, but eventually quit and refused to help further and that may have been the source of his enmity with her. My confusion over Lotor’s age is what lead me to never bother working that out further.

On to Robotech…in the final season of Robotech (New Generation, based on Genesis Climber MOSPEADA), the Invid Regess creates Simulgents out of cloned specimens. She is forever on the hunt across the universe for the perfect species to be the source of the next step in Invid evolution, and will resurrect long dead (extinct) creatures in her Genesis Pit to study them. The Simulgents created by the Regess are embued with the soul/life of Invid removed from the Invid Hive. The Invid are said to be protoplasmic but are shown as quasi slug-like in concept art.

The entire time I watched The Legend Begins, I was thinking of how quintessence was like protoculture (from Robotech) and how Honerva’s research and obsession mirrored that of Robotech Master Zor, who had communed with the Invid Regess during his own experiments. Quintessence and protoculture definitely are derived from the same sets of “unobtanium” tropes, right down to the purple/pink color, links with life energy, and transmutational properties.

So, my answer to your question about what I think the druids are is:

They could be rift entities transmuted via quintessence into an organic form (likely Altean-based)

They could be Frankenstein-esque resurrections of dead Alteans

They could be Alteans that return like vampires after they’ve been drained of their quintessence and then given it back (corrupted). After S6, I’m inclined to think it may be something like that.

Or, they could be a cult of surviving Alteans that have always served Haggar in exchange for something
