I climbed up to the cupola of the Sheldonian Theatre and looked out over Oxford’s luminous panorama of towers, quadrangles, spires, and domes ✨. The Sheldonian is where new Oxford students formally become members of the University and begin their journey through the ancient city which spreads out around this ceremonial centre 📜.

Christopher Wren

Sir Christopher Wren, one of the most highly-acclaimed English architects in history, was born #onthisday in 1632.

Wren oversaw the construction of 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666, including St Paul's Cathedral. Other notable buildings by Wren include the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, parts of Hampton Court Palace, and the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Wren also designed the famous Sheldonian Theatre here in Oxford, which was inspired by the form of the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome. The Sheldonian is depicted in this work by David Loggan, 1634 - 1692.

Matriculation is a ceremony where students formally join Oxford University. All students are required to do this when they are admitted to the University, unless they are Visiting or Exchange Students. The main matriculation ceremony takes place at the Sheldonian Theatre on the Saturday of First Week of Michaelmas Term and instructions are sent to newcomers before they come to University, and again before the ceremony itself. Full academic dress “Sub Fusc” is required at the ceremony. There are small matriculation ceremonies at the end of each term to matriculate students who are admitted after the start of Michaelmas Term, or who may have been given special permission to matriculate later.
