Pausing in the cool of the evening to look at the flowing river from Oxford’s Folly Bridge and admire the fantastical ‘Caudwell’s Castle’🏰.

Joseph Caudwell was a Victorian eccentric who built a brick castellated house adorned with statues and guarded by cannons on an island spanned by the bridge. He was regularly called on to defend his castle from prank-playing students and he once shot at a rowdy gang of undergraduates attempting to drag one of his cannons into the river! The bridge is actually named after a much older, and now long-gone, architectural ‘folly’. However, Caudwell’s unique house survives to carry on the tradition 🌟.

Lots of decorated initials! This 1759 copy of The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, a critical edition by William Blackstone, was printed by Clarendon Press in Oxford. Each copperplate initial depicts notable architecture in Oxford, including Radcliffe Camera, the "Tom Quad" quadrangle, University Church, Danby Gate, and Queen's College.
