Are you able to elaborate more on Shell Programming? Years ago our system told us that we were a shell. I have since learned that this is a term, which was a surprise. We have been diagnosed as DDNOS/OSDD. Mostly I don't switch out of the front. But there have been times when I have. Either when the body was younger or under extreme stress. We do remember being given a snail sculpture by a main abuser who lived with us when the body was little. We were told if the snail loses it's shell it dies.
There are many types of shells. Programmers/handlers often link the loss of the shell to death, or another feared torture. This keeps is done to keep the part fearful of challenging their programming, attempting to leave their area they are assigned to, or change their role in the system.
The likelihood of death as a result is low. (I say low as it may trigger other programming such as suicide if there isn’t proper support death may occur.)
Shell programming is designed to hide the system from the outside world.
