Baby blanket done in the shell stitch alternating between four rows of pink and six rows of lilac. Being only ninety-four rows tall, it took me fifteen days to make (April 2nd to the 17th). Border is single stitch on the top and bottom with the bean stitch along the sides for texture and visual interest.

(Tumblr refuses to let me upload all my pictures at once from my phone. Sorry for the format.)
basically, I made a gift for my aunt who has invited us over to her place for Christmas day. Originally it was gonna be a friendly mushroom with frills underneath its massive cap.
However, as I worked on it and draw closer to finishing the bottom of the cap, it looked more like a bird to me .
The technique I used to get the layers of shell stitches to look like feathers actually is kind of a wrist breaker if you’re not careful.
essentially, after you did all your increases up to 42 stitches in increments of six stitches and worked up roughly about three rows of single crochet.
in the front loops you start off with a single crochet then you do a shell stitch with five treble (double) crochets which gets secure immediately by slip stitch into the Free stitch next to it and then you repeat by making another single crochet until you’ve reached the end of your round after making your last shell stitch. You put a single crochet.
and in the back loops, you would decrease and then repeat this process until you’re up to 24 stitches. After you finish your final row of shell stitches you just simply see your crochet up the top 24 as if you were just crocheting a sphere and you finish off when you have six stitches from decreasing after five hours of 24.
That is effectively how I got the body .
Admittedly, all of this is free handed, and my wrists are in dreadful pain as a result.
though now I have something pretty cool to give to my aunt and a better idea what I’m gonna do next time I’m gonna try something like this because I really do love the end result.

working on a sock pattern and not only is the description of how to do the shell stitch incorrect in the explanation of the stitch, it's also wrong in the pattern itself.
In fact, I have to take the second row of the first explanation and match it to the second row of the second explanation to actually get the damn thing to work.
Never trust a shell pattern that says, "repeat row X" as the instruction for continuing a shell pattern. Unless the shells are stacked on top of each other (rare), this is just fucking wrong.
working on this one for myself.
The Shell Stitch is not to be confused with the Shell Chain Stitch. The Shell Stitch is kind of a combination of the Bullion Knot and the Chain Stitch.
