He burns. Hot as his deserts and hotter still, he burns. The fire is beneath the skin, curling over muscle and racing through his veins with such fury he scarcely remembers anything else. He has burned before, from the outside in. Somehow this feels worse. Vaguely he’s aware of his surroundings. The weight of a blanket over him, how soft and familiar it feels beneath his hands. The air smells like lavender and earthy and sweet. The walls twist and swirl and it feels, for a moment, as if he’s floating. Alfred grasps the blanket to keep himself grounded, to prevent from flying away.
Something cool touches his face and, at first, he tries to move away from it, the drastic temperature change almost too much. “Shh,” a familiar voice shushes him. The damp rag curls down his face and this time, he doesn’t run from it.
Arthur sits beside him, lips pulled into a tight frown. Feverish blue eyes stare at him, unseeing and he wonders if Alfred knows it’s him. For two days, the illness has clung to him, stubbornly refuses to let up. Going to hospital is out of the question. There isn’t much human doctors could do for him. Knowing Alfred will not die from this is a comforting thought, but it still pains him to see the man suffer.
“I warned you I would make you sick.” He chides lightly. “Just because you never catch colds does not mean you’re immune to them.” Arthur turns the cool rag over to pat the blond’s other cheek. Alfred moans pitifully as he follows it, desperate to find relief. Arthur folds the rag and lays it across his lover's forehead.
“Sucks…” Alfred croaks and coughs. “Was just helpin’ you… Sorry…”
“That isn’t what I meant.” Arthur clicks his tongue, mentally kicking himself. “You would’ve done what you wanted anyway. You always do.”
Alfred exhales a light laugh. “It’s my best quality, babe.” He turns his head away to cough again. The rag slides off his brow and Arthur puts it back in its place.
“You need to take more medicine.” He turns to the nightstand where the pill bottle sits. It is only then does he notice the empty glass. “Bugger.” He grumbles and picks up the glass then stands. “I’ll be right back.” Alfred reaches out suddenly as he turns, grasping his wrist with enough strength to make Arthur wince. His grip relaxes but he doesn’t let go. “Alfred, let go, I have to-”
“Don’t… Don’t leave…” Alfred pleads with him, looking at him, past him. Over his shoulder at something unseen.
Arthur sets down the glass so to place his hand over the one around his wrist. He squeezes it gently, assuringly. “I promise I’ll come back… all right?” He rubs soothing circles over knuckles. “I promise.” Slowly, Alfred releases him but Arthur does not. He brings the hand up toward his face and kisses the back of it. “Close your eyes, love.”
Alfred obeys, drained from the outburst and from the illness that continues to rage. Arthur kisses his hand again then places it on the bed, arm stretched down against the knitted blanket. He watches for a moment, how Alfred shivers and eyes move beneath closed lids. He picks up the glass again and heads out of the room, making quick work to refill it with water. When he returns, Alfred’s eyes are still closed. Chest moves as he breathes deeper, steadier, and he knows the man is asleep.
With a sigh, Arthur sits down again beside him. “Idiot.” He mutters. “You still need to take your medicine.” Alfred doesn’t acknowledge him and he doesn’t expect the man to wake up any time soon. He sets down the glass on the bedside table as he sits down and picks up the embroidery hoop previously set aside. His fingers move idly with needle and thread as he keeps vigil.
So which regeneration is the doctor in?
Doctor: “Your guess is as good as mine where I got it from.”

There seems to be a lot of “alfred NO!” In the mermaid au. Is there ever a “Daaaad, NO!”? :)
many... so many
In the UK, cats are let outdoors all the time, has Arthur ever done that to hero..?
Arthur and I met just a while before we got married and I swear at that instance I fell in love. I was head over heels for him. He was- is beautiful. You guys don't even understand. Every word he spoke just sounded so perfect out of his mouth. Everything he said to me was beautiful. Everything he did his beautiful.
As for Yao, I actually met him just as training had begun. He has a lot of experience in the subject so he taught me a lot. Not everything, I had a lot of teachers but he was a pretty present guy. It was three years of dealing with my silly questions to being stuck with me forever.
Thief of spades, of course ;) (but also snegland)
:D don’t tease everyone with snegland
and aren’t you forgetting Temptation Acknowledged? >.>
