Rib Time!

I fractured my rib a year-and-a-half ago, and am just now finding out about it now. Turns out they misdiagnosed me (thanks, Sherman!) but, now I know what is wrong, and can start to heal properly! Yay!!

What is your opinion on Austin College? Would you recommend it? What did you major in? I'm thinking about going there for my undergrad.

Hey there! (I hope you don’t mind me posting this - if you want this set to private, I’ll change this, no worries.)

Anyway, I majored in communication studies with an emphasis on theatre. I absolutely would recommend going there, but keep in mind that it’s not for everyone. (I mean, nothing is, really.)

I guess I’ll give you a list of what I liked and disliked, if that helps? What I liked: The campus is scenic and small, and feels cozy. Pretty much any professor you run into are approachable and laid-back, which was great for me, since I have some anxiety about those sorts of things sometimes. Also, you get to call them by their first name, which encourages debate and allows you to approach the subject or topic with less trepidation.

Oh, the January terms were my absolute favorite. During that three-week period (in January, obviously) you can either be on-campus, which is quieter and less stressful due to the lack of students, OR you can travel out-of-state or out-of-country. (Apologies if you know what Jan terms are - I just describe them as a knee-jerk reaction now.) And, the study-abroad programs are some of the best I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing.

Also, Sherman itself isn’t so bad. My freshman year (2010), you couldn’t walk on the sidewalks bordering campus without the very real possibility of getting mugged, but now that’s not the case! Yay! And honestly the surrounding neighborhoods aren’t that unsafe, really - most of the sorority and fraternity houses are on the streets around the school, so it’s not a rare sight to see mildly intoxicated college students rambling down residential streets at three in the morning.

 (Speaking of that, be careful if you’re aiming to be one of them - the cops there are cracking down on that sort of thing. Always take a sober buddy with you, or make sure the place the party is at allows you to crash there.)

Things I disliked: The administration was a bit strange at times? I really have no good way of explaining what I mean, but … Sometimes, dealing with the administration was a pain in the ass, depending on what it is you need or want. For example, my interactions with Student Life ranged from great to terrible. That said, everyone else offered little to no problems, especially our president. She is the coolest lady ever, I swear. She makes a point to get to know your name if she’s met you, so that’s pretty damn awesome. I managed to have a few private conversations with her, the first of which was when I was deciding whether or not to go there. That was one of the things that sealed the deal.

The community is super-duper small, which can lead to friction and a relentless, never-ending rumor mill. If you become famous (or infamous, rather), there’s really no way to escape that. I mean, obviously people move on and things change, but there will always be stories. Also, if you have to avoid someone (like I did), good luck, haha. (I mean really, it’s not so bad. The school was very willing to work with us both to make sure our stay at AC was as smooth as possible.)

Honestly, despite all my gripes, I feel like AC was the best fit for me. If I had to do it all over again, I’d still apply and go there. I’d change everything I did after that, for sure. I honestly, truly enjoyed my time there. I learned far more inside the classroom and out than I would have otherwise. The location and the city make for a really close-knit, rural feeling. You form strong bonds. You meet a lot of very good people.

If you haven’t taken a tour, I strongly suggest doing so. Approach current students. Ask them what they like and dislike. Get to know the campus.  See if you can see yourself there. Who knows? Maybe it’ll be your final decision to go there, and that ends up being one of the best you’ve made thus far. I don’t know, but either way, I hope that no matter where you choose to go, you have a great time, and learn as much as you can.

everyone's leaving - family has already left and put everything they could into storage. all I've got left now is my computer charger, my purse, and a few other things. sleeping on just a mattress tonight

I'll stay another day; roommate is still here and can let me in despite me turning in my key already. After I take a nap / sleep like the dead / whatever, I'm going to sneak around the dorm like a creeper and try to print of my paper. I'll get it to my mentor - jeez he's been amazing, letting me turn this in late. Told me not to panic and everything.
