To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don't need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself. And the world will accept you the way you are. And I took this belief with me as I stepped out of #sheroeshangout cafe in Agra. I met Bala and Rupa, fighters.. they fought to survive heinous acid attack crime. Just like Bala and Rupa, there are total 8 acid attack fighters running this cafe. The cafe also has jazzy wall graffiti but what took my heart was ' PAY AS YOU WISH' concept. Unquestionably the hardest portrait I have ever made. To think that a father could throw acid on his daughter because she was not born a boy. Where is the sense in it? I still remember seeing this remarkable young woman sitting in the sun smiling and being totally drawn to her energy, despite enduring this awful attack when she was just a young child she is living her life... smiling, working and earning. To say she is not an inspiration would be a gross understatement. I only hope #sheroeshangout can use this portrait to help raise awareness for their vitally important #stopacidattack campaign. I was recently in New Delhi and met this remarkable woman who was the victim of an acid attack as a small child. Her father wanted sons not daughters and in a fit of rage threw acid on her mother, 3-year-old sister and herself. Tragically her little sister died. The mother and daughter are now part of an extraordinarily initiative and campaign to stop these awful acid attacks. They set up a cafe, Sheroes Hangout, near the Taj Mahal, making delicious food, raising awareness about their campaign Stop Acid Attacks and have also achieved economic independence and autonomy. I met her as she was sitting in the sun, smiling. It was humbling to meet mother and daughter and I promised I would paint her portrait and help to raise awareness about an issue that is ubiquitous and unjust. Whether it involves property disputes or rejected marriage proposals, acid attacks occur more than a thousand times each year in India. In December 2014, acid attack survivors found a refuge in Sheroes Hangout, a cafe in Utter Pradesh (in northern India), that is run by the survivors and supported by an activist movement called “Stop Acid Attacks.”

“Sheroes Hangout is not only giving us a chance to move our lives forward; it is also getting our stories out,” said Rupa, a skilled tailor, an amateur apparel designer and a survivor.
