- The Fosters
All The Black Femmes || Heroes
Heroes is the first place that I saw Tawny Cypress, Dana Davis,Dania Ramirez, Tiffany Hines, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Candice Patton, Christine Adams, Paula Newsome, and Ayla Rose Barreau. Some of those, I didn't realize until making this list, but most of them, my brain collected them in these small parts from what was at the time my favorite show, despite not having much of anything in the way of Black female representation.
(The follow up was even worse. Not because there weren't any, but because it was not nearly as good of a show and the representation I remember was abysmal. I only watched it once and remember MAYBE 2 of the Black women)
This post is not a watchlist recommendation.
The Black representation was not good, but also, for its time was... well, it was a lot compared to what we usually got. Not to be an old lady, but y'all have no idea how good y'all have it these days. Scifi, Fantasy, Horror, etc (anything with superpowers or supernatural forces you only got a small pocket of Black characters and they got minimal screen time or secondary plotlines).
I appreciated Heroes. Like I said, it was one of my favorite shows and introduced me to a few of my favorite ladies. I discovered this show during a hurricane displacement in which I was out of work, went to a Hollywood Video and got the first season to catch up and the rest of it I watched in progress for the years it ran. I had some fandom friends. I found a longtime fave in the main antagonist. Some really great ideas were there, but the strike and behind the scenes things really made it... not what it could be.
It is the Heroes Anniversary today. (I thought it was the 20 year, but it is actually the 19 year. I was gonna queue this for next year, but at the rate I am going, idk that I'll be here). Happy Heroes Day, though. I loved Heroes. I don't know that I would love it today, and I haven't rewatched it since the return Heroes Reborn was created in 2015. Baby I did not like it.
I have been thinking of rewatching Heroes. I might, if only just to see how much I've changed in 20 19 years!
*Sidenote: Dania Ramirez is not playing a Black character, but I have seen her identified as Afro Latina multiple times, so I've included her, despite her not really having much of a presence on this page*
Have you seen The Fosters (2013-2018)?
Yes
Partially
No, but I've heard of it
Never heard of it
fav or reblog if you save.
