NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN A LESSON
Finally! After months of different shoots I (think anyway..) have a good variety of photos for my portfolio. I selected a few photos from each shoot I've done, printed, and now I have to narrow down to find the perfect combination for the portfolio. These pictures are a combination of doing TFP/trade shoots (which make up most of the photos) and two paid shoots.
One HUGE lesson learned from doing these shoots is that infamous saying.. "If it sounds too good to be true..." Well. I got talked in to paying for a shoot from a "really experienced and amazing photographer" who can get me those last shots I "need". I had had such great experience with all the other photographers up till this point that I didn't ask a lot of questions because, until this experience, I thought certain things were standard. They are not!!!
The session with this "amazing photographer" was a total let down, the photos were even more disappointing, and then when I brought up the subject of a reshoot (as I was promised) it was clear that was not going to happen. Out of 5 different looks he took a total of 78 photos (thats how much time he spent with me) and out of 78 photos I have ONE great photo, AND out of 5 looks and a lot of money paid he only owed me 2 edited photos. Which is crap. But now I know what to ask before I agree to anything.
All in all it's an expensive lesson learned and I am ready to move on and forget the negative!! My focus now is to finalize my book and then hit the pavement submitting to agencies. We'll see!!!!

When All Else Fails.. Box.
If there is a will there's a way.
I feel like I have been on hold for months!! When in reality it has only been a few weeks. I am almost done putting my portfolio together - just waiting on some pictures back! I am still short a few photos I was hoping to have taken (that will be a whole other blog called "Trust Your Instincts!") by now but it is what it is and I am ready to move on!!
So! While I wait.. I talked my Mr. in to doing a boxing training session with me and having my awesome neighbor document it in hopes for some great fit and lifestyle photos.

In other news. Kickstarter denied my project (bhoo!) so I finally got everything transferred over to Indiegogo and it's live!! Check it out!

Kickstarting My Soul!

I knew a COMPLETE change in careers would be costly (both mentally and financially by the way!!) I had no idea the extent! While it is in no way in comparison to the money spent on training the brain (ie school, college, all the years working jobs that rely solely on the my smarts) it is still a cost. Thankfully the subject of a "spending cap" was brought up recently and it definitely made me think if one doesn't have a cap on what one would want (or can) spend then costs would add up VERY quickly.
Once I did some math I realized how much I had spent and how quickly it added up. AND not only am I still lacking day to day necessities go-sees, castings, and have booked my final (meaning not paying for any more until I have some work lined up) shoot coming up! After a brief panic I decided I simply need to be a little creative and rethink my approach to this new adventure. After some research on crown funding I decided that, in efforts to avoid draining my savings completely, I would put together a Kickstarter!
From the beginning phases of creating my project - I had two clear guidelines for myself:
1) I did not want to rely on my friends or family. Why? Since this isn't necessarily a "cause" and because I don't run in a social circle of old or new money, I feel very strange and insensitive asking for support (aka money) to help fund my choice in a late career change. I would really love to find support in the community I am looking to work in. This process as a whole has been such a challenge, it would really mean a lot to find a support circle and I feel like donations would be a sign of support and encouragement that I can do this!
2) I didn't want the project to be solely about me and my new journey. The idea of asking for funds and not having a meaningful reward to offer back didn't sit well. It felt one-sided and a bit empty. After voicing my discomfort my Mr. came up with the brilliant idea that I offer my services in the community as a reward for donations received. Which is perfect!
The past few days I have been beyond consumed with this project! Getting the wording down so it's short and sweet but to the point and appealing; researching what Kickstarters succeed over others; brainstorming who this story would appeal to..etc. It is all finally coming together and I look forward to the next few days when I can post a live link!!
Risky Business. But in a good way!

What's a "mother agency"? Until this past weekend, I had no idea! Another bit of information that would be handy in a “model guide” book..! A mother agency is a person or agency can have multiple purposes (from what I read in short) serves as a networker/connector or even an agent connecting you to agencies. They generally have professional relationships established with agencies and photographers, have insight with contracts, and can provide guidance on building portfolios. It is suggested that if you live in a city that is flooded with agencies then you are less likely to need a mother agent, better suited for anyone living in remote or small towns that do not have access to agencies in a close range. They do of course have fees which can range from having an initial fee for networking with goal of you signing to a longer term agreement in which they would get cuts of your work as your grow. Agreements will vary from "mother" to "mother".
At the moment I have an offer for representation but the concern for me is the agency seems to have a very large database. Even though either way it's a risk I feel like I, personally, would benefit more from having this connection to plethora of agencies and networks. One thing is for sure- to make my portfolio stronger I did agree to have (pay) more photos taken! Will be with an experienced photographer of 15 years and in good faith an extreme discount. Excited to see what we get!!!
