gaze  narrows  before  drifting  around  the  space,  a  suspicious  look  pulling  across  her  features  as  she  attempts  to  spot  whatever  it  was  holland  was  referring  to.  “  okay.  spill.  what  did  you  touch  ?  ”  shifting  an  accusatory  gaze  over  to  the  other  girl,  though  the  quirk  to  the  corners  of  her  lips  would  tell  her  she’s  not  being  completely  serious.  “  i  told  you  not  to  touch  anything,  holland  !  ”  holding  her  hands  up  with  a  sigh,  slowly  approaching  the  other.  “  i  won’t  be  mad,  i  swear,  just  tell  me...  did  you  break  the  thing  you  touched...?  ”  a  brow  lifts,  head  tilting  as  she  keeps  her  gaze  pinned  on  the  other.  “  for  real  though,  i  don’t  mind.  most  the  stuff  in  here  is  junk  anyway,  so  don’t  worry  about  it.  ”  reaching  her  side,  reaching  out  to  touch  the  back  of  her  hand.  “  show  me  ?  ”

she’s  silent  for  a  long  time  after  her  question,  pulling  her  knees  to  her  chest,  arms  wrapping  around  them  as  she  stares  out  through  the  window  at  the  darkness  beyond.  “  it’s  not  a  nightmare,  holland.  ”  she  keeps  her  voice  just  slightly  above  a  whisper  in  an  attempt  not  to  disturb  madison,  who  had  seemed  to  drift  finally  into  some  sort  of  sleep;  though  she  knew  she  would  not  be  able  to  do  the  same  for  some  time.  swallowing  as  she  shifts  her  gaze  to  meet  the  others,  eyes  wide;  haunted.  “  i  don’t  think  i’ll  ever  be  able  to  go  back  to  normal,  not  after  tonight.  ”  not  after  they  were  all  almost  killed  by  whatever  the  fuck  had  become  of  those  people  in  the  hospital.  “  i  get  it  though.  why  you  want  to.  and  you  don’t  have  to  like  --  continue  or  anything,  holland...  ”  she  swallows,  shaking  fingers  lifting  to  push  her  hair  from  her  face.  “  but  i  --  i  need  to  know  what  the  fuck  that  all  was.  where  it  came  from,  what  it’s  doing  here,  in  hawkins.  in  our  home.  ”  eyes  close  for  a  long  moment,  inhaling  a  deep  breath.  “  you  should  get  some  sleep.  i’ll  keep  watch,  or  whatever...  ”  pausing,  reaching  one  hand  out  to  touch  against  her  fingers.  “  you’re  safe  here.  i’ll  make  sure  of  it,  okay  ?  ”

she  forces  herself  to  ignore  the  sharp  pang  against  her  heart,  choosing  instead  to  roll  her  eyes,  forcing  herself  to  look  away  from  the  hurt  in  holland’s  eyes  --  the  very  same  hurt  she  was  certain  would  have  been  reflected  in  her  own  eyes  the  day  she  watched  holland  laughing  with  a  blonde  at  her  side  across  the  other  side  of  the  cafeteria  ;  not  just  any  blonde  cheerleader  either,  but  the  very  same  one  that  had  broken  her  heart.  torn  asunder  from  it’s  place  within  her  chest.  swallowing,  she  forces  herself  back  to  the  present,  forces  herself  to  look  back  to  holland  with  a  neutral  expression,  spine  straightening.  “  i’m  not  doing  anything,  holland.  ”  she  grits  out,  arms  lifting  to  cross  across  her  chest.  “  just  go  back  to  your  friends.  forget  about  this,  about  me.  it’s  for  your  own  good  really.  they  don’t  like  us  freaks  much.  ”  allowing  her  gaze  to  slip  past  her  to  the  friends  in  question  for  only  a  moment,  forcing  a  smile  on  her  lips.  “  it’s  alright.  really.  ”

lips  curl  at  her  words,  turning  to  face  her  with  irritation  swamping  her  gaze.  “  oh  spare  me  the  fucking  lecture,  holland.  ”  eyes  roll  to  the  heavens,  arms  crossing  tight  across  her  chest.  “  i  don’t  need  to  hear  it.  maddy  tried  to  spin  the  same  bullshit  a  hundred  times  before,  and  if  zach  and  jason  don’t  prove  how  incorrect  that  statement  is,  then  you  are  truly,  truly  delusional.  ”  a  huff  escapes,  one  hand  shifting  to  push  her  hair  back  from  her  face.  “  look,  whatever  it  is  you’re  trying  to  do  ?  stop.  just  go  back  to  maddy  and  leave  me  out  of  this.  ”
