My grandparents have it on the news right now and they’re interviewing Shetamia Taylor, the civilian who was shot in Dallas. She said she and her sons were part of the peaceful march and everything was going quite well. Most people were headed up to the rally, but they decided to head back to the car because she had to work early. They were walking along Main Street when she heard a shot ring out. She turned toward the sound and just then another shot sounded and she saw the police officer start to fall. As he was going down, he said, “He has a gun, run!” So they did. As they were running, a bullet bounced off the ground and hit her in the leg. Her sons didn’t realize she was hit but were trying to protect her, as she was trying to protect them. They ended up on the ground with one of her sons trying to cover her and then a bunch of police officers came running and were asking if anyone was hit. Several of them shielded both Shetamia and her sons with their bodies.

These are the kinds of stories that are important to hear.

Ones where people understand that this protest was PEACEFUL. And these people aren’t “thugs” or “criminals.” They were out raising awareness in an organized, non-violent way. And the cops that were there were willing to die to protect those people. We need more cops like them.

I like to believe situations like this show us the true heart of humanity. That most of us do want peace and equality and safety.

But then I remember the reason this rally was even taking place, and the person who decided to open fire on innocent people.

We should all strive to be like Shetamia, and the officers who were there. If we stand up for each other... TOGETHER... then we are truly on the path to “liberty and justice for ALL” and not just for SOME.

Shetamia Taylor, 37, took her teenage sons to the #BlackLivesMatter rally in Dallas Thursday night.

She wanted to teach them about peaceful protest.

When shots started raining down, Taylor reacted by shielding her sons from the gunfire. She was hit by a bullet in the calf.

She is expected to make a full recovery. Tragically, she had just posted on Facebook about fearing for her children’s safety.
