This wasn't supposed to happen. It shouldn't be possible. But here they were, she had seen the cold dark and returned. He remembered how unsettling it had been the first few times, like a lingering chill that worked into your very core, even after you'd come back.

"Could be a fluke." A one-off. And it would haunt him. What if they made assumptions and then she didn't come back? Jack placed a glass of bourbon in front of her, straight up and full. "Let's see." If she couldn't get drunk, he'd settle a bit as to whether next time would be the last.

A pause as he sat next to her, leaning on his knees with a sigh.

"It'll pass-- the cold." He stated, head tilting to look at her as if to judge whether she was going to snap at any moment. He wanted to apologize, but it wouldn't put itself into words.
