Here are some of the women who fought for independence in the Ili Rebellion. Rizwangul Hashim (1925-1945) (top left) was famed for battle strategy and first aid, and also learnt to shoot different sorts of guns in order to replace snipers who became incapacitated on the battlefield. Her death saving a comrade, Chungakhun, from bullets at the Battle of Herembagh led to a popular battlecry: For Rizwangul! She will forever be remembered as a hero
