shift change
The last few patrons were beginning to leave the library. It was ten minutes till closing and they all needed to be home to watch the broadcast in forty minutes. The library was like this every night. It was easy to fall into a pattern.
M’gann smiled politely at the last person in line. An older woman checking out a copy of Little Fires Everywhere. “It’s very interesting,” M’gann noted, scanning the bar code. “A lot of people have been checking it out lately. I hope you like it.”
That was it for the night. Or, at least, it was supposed to be. She started to check the catalog and get ready to go home. Without taking her eyes off the computer or her hands off the keys, M’gann let her ponytail tumble onto her shoulders in red waves. Her name tag faded into her blazer and the blazer, in turn, shifted into a navy blue cardigan.
She saved the file, logged out, stood up, and immediately noticed someone else in the room. The alien squinted. Probably better not to say anything about the change. She awkwardly tugged at one of her sleeves before slipping back into the picture of professionalism. “The library is now closed. We hope you’ll come back soon.” M’gann motioned towards the door.
