This might be a shameless self-promoting, but if you liked the live action Attack on Titan and the Shikishima/Mikasa thing they had going on, you might want to check out my shikimika tag. As far as I know, I'm the only one to write an english fic for those two and I plan on having more. So if a fanfic is your thing, feel free to look at mine. This shamelessness of yours is ABSOLUTELY welcome, so feel no shame, feel no shame, m’dear, for I was absolutely _swept_away_ by the ShikiMika interpretation of RivaMika - heck, I admit I _loved_ that swaggity swag guy just about as much as I _disliked_ the Levi in the anime (thankfully, Isa knows what he does in the manga, so manga is off-limits perf). Wicked, I know, most people are currently angsting in displeasure over how the real action movie screwed and warped Levi’s character whereas I’m in that minority who enjoyed every moment of Shikishima’s trollity swag XDThis said - thank you mightily for contacting me and sharing the tag where wonders dwell :) I very much appreciate the notion and ohmg can’t wait for the Part II to be aired.And dear, dear, I see that you feel my angst considering the SCAR KINK. The Way We Hurt 01

My attempt at making some sort of coherent backstory for these two (which will probably be proven wrong by the second movie). Expect small chapters of cca 1000 words every day or so (got to write while the inspiration lasts).

Title taken, as has become my habit when it comes to this pairing, from lyrics for an Escape the Fate's song; Chemical Love this time (it could be their theme song).

She has beaten the odds.

That is the first thing people in the hospital notice about her. She has beaten the odds.

Mikasa knows she's supposed to be dead. She has been supposed to be eaten and she has two ugly scars on her left side to prove it. She remembers the hot air and stench of the Titan's mouth, the pressure and pain as its teeth closed down around her. She remembers every vivid detail much as she tries to forget.

The man who has saved her visits sometimes. She dislikes his visits because they bring on the tittering by the nurses ("Oh, he's such a handsome man!") which is followed by the looks of pity ("He must feel responsible for her. Such a shame, though, her face's pretty enough but those scars, enough to turn off any man."). They are blind, jealous hags, all of them, Mikasa thinks viciously as she hobbles around her room, gritting her teeth against the pain in her still healing flesh.

As bad as the tittering and the pitying looks are, though, the way he looks at her is somehow worse. It's an assessing look, as if he's taking stock of who exactly she is and she's coming short in the evaluation. He's always polite, talking to her easily but there's something in his eyes, as if he's waiting for something. She thanked him the first time she was lucid enough so it can't be that.

It's the day she almost wrecks her hand by beating the wall that things change. Her anger has been building up steadily with no outlet. She's broken and damaged and hateful and she just needs to let it out. She punches the wall next to her bed and the pain is different from the one she's used to. She does it again, the skin at her knuckles splitting open.

She punches the wall. There's a red smear and a small indentation.

She does it again. More red. A deeper indentation. Again. Again. More strength behind the swing. Ag-

Before she can settle into a proper rhythm, she's being pulled back. She struggles against whoever it is - taller and stronger than her - but her hands are seized and held by wrists in a grip that is tight and almost painful.

She glares resentfully at Captain Shikishima. He is looking at her bloodied hand with something that could pass for a smile. And when he lifts his eyes, it's different. He no longer finds her wanting. The realization stuns her enough that she stops her struggling and he lets go of her, slowly as if waiting to see if she tries to do something again.

"That was a stupid thing to do," he tells her.

"I never asked you to save me," she spits back and it's not just about her hand. It's about her entire life, a life that has been saved by this stranger instead of Eren.

"You have a lot of spirit," he notes absently as he sits in the one chair available. "A lot of strength, too."

"What do you want from me? Why do you keep coming here?" she voices the questions she has held back for a while. It's as if her punching the wall and hurting her hand released something in her. He says nothing for a moment and it's only then she notices he's wearing not just his usual uniform but also the maneuver gear. He wore it that day when he saved her, too. Her memory of the Titan is clear but the afterwards becomes blurry. She remembers the swinging motion and the feeling of being carried, but it's all buried under the memory of the pain, both physical and emotional.

"You were supposed to die, Mikasa," he says. "The blood loss alone, not to mention the damage to your internal organs, it should have killed you before I got you anywhere close to help. And yet here you stand, alive and almost healthy again. That is-" he pauses as if looking for the right words and then he smiles. "-unbelievable. It's rare to see such a survival instinct."

"Am I a rarity then? A passing amusement?" She sneers at the notion. Shikishima stands up and takes hold of her injured hand. She suppresses a wince of pain - her hand's starting to really hurt now that her anger is spent - and then she suppresses a shiver when his touch gentles and he strokes her bloodied knuckles soothingly.

"A rarity? Certainly," he speaks in a low voice. "A passing amusement? Not likely. You have a potential, Mikasa, a potential to be so much more. You could become strong. You could kill your nightmares yourself."

She realizes where this leads, should have known from the beginning. He's trying to recruit her and a part of her wants to say yes. The same part that has delighted in punching the wall, the same part that has her asking questions instead of keeping quiet.

"Think about it and let me know next time," he says when she doesn't reply. "And no more of this," he holds up her injured hand. He lets go of it, pulls out a handkerchief, cleans off her blood off his fingers and then he turns and walks out. Mikasa watches him leave, cradling her hand, still feeling his touch. She has a lot of thinking to do.
