Ivan Pokidyshev - Shining man
My commission of B'wana Beast by Jason Spyda Adams
This was done in Jason's sketch book which I believe he still has copies available. Contact Jason Spyda Adams for details.
The King of the Turks (after spring cleaning).
“cooking sample”
Fire Man is cooking without hands and Shining Man wants to taste even though he doesn’t have a mouth. Wonderful.

The Bleak Legend
The place for those broken and lost, those summer days walking up and down the sidewalk and watching the cars passing by. For everything that's part of it. The Bleak Legend is the land of those things. It's the home of countless fairy tales and the depths of the childlike mind. It's filled with secret places and it's always summer there. The trees are all dead, because it's so bright there. And yet no one gets hurt...
It's filled with bleached colors, and it's the place where everything makes sense to the disorganized mind. If the trees did have leaves, they would be black leaves. The colors are there, but only look pale yellow, white, and black. It's the place of childhood righteousness. It's solace for those bullied or excluded, and always takes you through an adventure you'll forget. I just remembered...
Not much. The trees were all white and yellow. It looked straight out of a monochrome platformer. There wasn't much grass, and I don't even remember what I was wearing. There was the Shining Man there, because he's in all my memories, and there were other things, too. Things that I still draw when I'm not paying attention in class.
Machinery. There were living machines. They had souls and hearts, and knew that they weren't going to live forever. That made them sad. They were going to die, as soon as I left.
Also, forest creatures. The kind that you know about, but don't really believe existed at some time. Foxes. Deer. Wolves.
And then there were the others, that weren't normal, but made sense to me at the time.
There were faceless people, walking around. If I had to give them names, I'd call them sprites. Each had features if you looked at the features individually, but as soon as you looked at a whole one, it became a blur of paper and graphite.
There were the Else, as well. Snapdragons. Ratsnakes. Broken things and broken people. It was beautiful. It looked like a fairy tale. You could tell who was bad, because they were colored in black mainly. No one was completely shaded out, even the Shining Man. His body was all black, but there was a light inside his lantern. There's good in everyone, even those inhuman and those human.
Life's not just growing up. It's not just about feeding yourself and reproducing. There's a bigger point, and that point is that the Bleak Legend is all around us. Any sort of belief in it just makes it stronger. I've already seen enough to convince me of this, at least until I forget again. It's bound to happen.
I live in this place of shadows and unreality. Of monsters and men, of monsters of men. I live in the land of uncanny swamps and exits unintentional. And you know what?
I wouldn't leave it. Not for the world.
Memory
I forgot something today. Or, to be more accurate, I remembered that I had forgotten something. All I had to retrieve it was:
It was so happy, and so sad. And something about the color blue?
I checked my bases in my head. Strom was still there. Sky City, there. Shining Man, check. Even the neighborhood map was there. And yet I could tell that there was something missing. And I felt like I had lost a great deal because of it.
And then, an hour or so ago, I remembered it. A secret I've never told anyone, because the burden was too terrible for them to bear. I remembered why I'm here on this Earth.
I'm here because God hates me. Not any one in particular, I am here because I've been issued a challenge by some supreme force. A challenge I plan to accept.
It will begin on January 9, 2012. I will start to change the world.
And I really f*cking hope it goes as I plan.
