(Cyrus on his 50th day of no sleep, pouring dirt into a coffee maker filled with seaweed he'd harvested from under his desk while Jeff listens) “The more you do stuff, the better you get at dealing with how you still fail at it a lot of the time.”
John Mulaney Sentence Starters - you could send me one six months from now and i’d go ham
Jeff was no stranger to what missing sleep looked like, after all, he pulled more all-nighters than he ever had in his life staying up and making weapons to fight Giygas and his minions. He’s also fairly familiar with what coffee grounds look like, having his own coffee maker back at the boarding house and being somewhat of a coffee addict himself despite his age. What he’s trying to say is, he’s pretty sure that the other is most likely sleep-deprived and that what Cyrus is putting in that coffee maker are not coffee grounds.
“Uh... I suppose that’s true. But you have to admit that failing at things helps us improve, in some form. Models of machines wouldn’t improve, and people wouldn’t either, really, if they didn’t fail in some capacity.
Not to change the subject, though, but, uh, Cyrus, is that... dirt?”

Cyrus blinked a couple of times, as he got used to his surroundings. His eyes were drawn to the figure before him, and for a brief moment, he thought he was looking directly into a portal to the past.
Spiked hair, still blue in contrast to his own brown, the familiar grey outfit, with the even more familiar golden G emblazoned on the breast...
Ah. Yet another version of himself?
‘...This... is beginning to happen with almost alarming frequency,’ was all he had to say to his counterpart.

“The only instrument I can play is the piano. I don’t really think I’m anything better than average at it, but I’ve been learning it since I was very young, so that might have something to do with why I know so much about it.
I like playing it, actually, though it’s quite different than fixing things. Most people are surprised that I have a hobby that doesn’t lie within the sciences, but I’ve never really thought of it that way.”
👪 Found family! (We know Dr. A is a mad genius but does he know that his son is learning from an EVIL mad genius??? RIP Dr. A)
Send 👪 to suggest our muses become found family - Accepting 🥺
[Honestly YES. They have a huge mentor/mentee relationship as well as kind of a father son relationship too - and Jeff is kinda a mad genius in training so honestly I love the idea that Jeff doesn’t really grasp Cyrus’ science as “evil” bc he doesn’t see what he’s doing with it, and hey this guy is nice to him and respects him as a fellow scientist so he can’t be all that bad! ...right?]

Send ‘regress’ to meet my muse as a child [Accepting!]
The small child was playing in the sand close to the river that ran though this part of the town. His brother was off with the other children and the one friend he had was off doing other things with her parents.
His mind was focused on the mound he was making until an odd feeling came to him. Like he was being watched.
Lucas turned his head around to see the stranger behind him; quickly grabbing the stuffed toy that laid close to his body. In that instant, Lucas’ body started quivering in fear.
No matter how many times his parents reassured him that there were strangers he could trust....Lucas always had taken the notion of ‘Stranger Danger’ a bit too seriously.
(For the april 1st!) "Well well, if it isn't Jeff. Can't say I'm surprised to find you here. So much potential can be quite a burden, yes? Although it's a shame how you were destined for greater things, I must commend you for your tenacity. All that hatred and rage finally released from its cage. That is the sorry nature of the human heart, so weak and incomplete that a mere hair can nudge it past its breaking point. Alas, I didn't come here to scold you. You simply did what you had to do."
Unprompted Asks - Always Accepting!
Jeff very carefully folds his hands, not breaking eye contact with the man on the other side of the bulletproof glass. Jeff appears to be a harmless enough young man at first glance - looks like he’s in his late twenties, his tow blond hair unkempt with no attempt to tame the wavy flyaways. The only thing off about him is how still he is: he’s utterly composed, not fidgeting or looking away.
That is, until the other begins speaking to him, and his expression quickly darkens. Despite the other man’s insistence that he wasn’t there to scold him like some sort of disobedient child, that is exactly how it feels to Jeff. What’s worse is how this man seems to think he understands Jeff’s line of thinking, or the reasons Jeff had for committing the acts that led to his imprisonment in the first place.
“I believe there’s been a misunderstanding.”
He begins, and there’s no attempt to be polite. He sharply taps a finger on his side of the table.
“You seem to have the impression that you have the slightest idea as to why I am here, or that you have the intelligence to understand any sort of so-called potential within me in the first place. I will be very clear: I did none of this because I believed I had to forgo any “greater things”, or in fear of not pursuing them. I did none of this because I had a weak heart, as you claim.”
His words with dripping with venom. Though he can’t help the amused smile that forms on his face, and the cold laugh that escapes him.
“I did none of this because I had to. I had no means to an end; no reason at all. I did this because I wanted to. The opportunity to kill presented itself, and I very gladly took it without reason nor regard for the consequences.
I suppose you could say... I did it because I could, that was all. And it was fun. I guess that’s my reason...?”
UGH hit me up with a Twilight Zone “The magic of a child’s smile, the magic of liking and being liked, the strange and wondrous mysticism that is the simple act of living.“
Twilight Zone Starters - No Longer Accepting
That was certainly a philosophical way to look at life, and more positive than maybe seen at first glance. It reminded Jeff of the kinds of motivational things he and his friends had heard from other people they’d encountered over the course of the war against Giygas. Reminders for them to keep their heads up and that you could find simple joys just living.
It was one of the things that someone had told him that helped him change his perspective to look at things in a brighter light the more difficult things got. One of the things that had convinced Jeff that the Earth was worth saving.
The words make him smile, and he tilts his head slightly to give Cyrus an amused but curious look.
“It’s a nice way to look at things. Did you come up with that on your own or is that a saying from where you’re from?”
