Okay more thoughts on Shinya in the series and why I think he’s going to be one of the most important characters in the series...
So we all know the basics, Shinya was one of Guren’s closest friends in high school, then died thanks Mahiru we hate you and was brought back to life by Guren who couldn’t live without his best friend.
Now lets look at the current events in the story and to summarize, Guren is a demon who is basically betraying everyone and wants to save the world and is going along with Mahiru’s plan to do it (I’m doubtful that said plan will save the world as she has VERY different goals and basically helped start the catastrophe bc this is all her plan BUT THATS ANOTHER POST FOR ANOTHER DAY SISHJSKS) (also this is long af sorry not sorry)
So, where does Shinya fit in?
Shinya is the one that realized that Guren is being used as Mahiru’s puppet before anyone else did (besides probably Shinoa unless she did believe that Guren had full control over his demon which I’m doubtful that she did).
Shinya is first shown realizing this the first time Guren gets possessed and starts helping with the experiment openly and kills his comrads and he sees Guren’s red eyes aka demon eyes. Thats when Shinya confronts him and asks about Mahiru, which he was 100% right about.
Shinya is also seen questioning and then attacking Guren when Guren’s squad is first heading to and arriving to where Shinoa’s squad is with Ferid and Crowley. He obviously wants answers, later he concludes that Mahiru is the puppet master.
And well, he’s right.
And then we get to the most recent events where Shinya risks his life and getting possessed by a demon to save Guren from demon control aka Mahiru’s control and plans.
So, what does this all mean for Guren and Shinya
What I think it means is foreshadowing that Shinya will be the one to save Guren and start his redemption.
Shinya has a LOT of love for Guren, either as romantic love or as his friend. We already know that he basically idolizes Guren and even Byakomaru suggests that Shinya is in love and obsessed with Guren and he is a demon that knows Shinya’s desires.
And what Shinya desires most at this point in the story is to save Guren.
Do I think Shinya can save Guren? Yes. Absolutely.
Shinya may be a character that jokes around a lot and acts aloof, but he’s serious when it comes to who he cares about. And he cares about Guren and it shows in every moment he appears in the same scene as Guren.
The real question to me is: when will Guren be saved, how does Shinya do it, and what is the cost?
I think if Shinya does manage to save Guren, I think it will become one of the main focuses of this arc after we deal with whatever is happening to Mika and get that out of the way and he will use every person he can to help.
If Guren gets saved, it will most likely be sooner rather than later because obviously Guren knows shit and can reveal whatever Mahiru’s plan is and stop it.
So how can he save Guren? In my opinion the only way is to extract Mahiru and Noya from him, the two demons that have been tainting him. The dead, honestly toxic lover, and the first demon he had.
What will the cost be though? If things go well, Shinya stays oblivious to the fact that he’s supposed to be dead. If not... well... we all know what happens.
So in summary, I do think Guren can be saved, and if he is (I think its more of a when considering his character set up, the storyline, his past actions, and his goal which is a good one aka saving the world) Shinya will be a main player in that because he loves Guren and Guren is his best friend and he wants to save his best friend from the twisted path of fate he is currently walking down.
